Org. Setting and Reporting This position is located in the Human Trafficking and Migrant Smuggling Section (HTMSS), Organized Crime and Illicit Trafficking Branch (OCB), Division for Treaty Affairs (DTA), United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), in Vienna. The incumbent will work under the direct supervision of the Team Leader of Section’s Management, Monitoring and Evaluation Team and the overall supervision of the Chief of Human Trafficking and Migrant Smuggling Section.

Responsibilities Within assigned authority, the Public Information Officer will be responsible for the following specific tasks:

  • Ensure implementation of information programmes and campaigns to publicize the work of HTMSS Global Programmes against Human Trafficking and Migrant Smuggling through the organization of major events, the drafting of information material and the production of communication products such as audio-visual materials, press releases, radio spots, website stories, podcasts etc.
  • Monitor and analyze media impact and trends on human trafficking and migrant smuggling to ensure an agile approach; identify issues and advise on appropriate action/responses; produce social media assets, undertake research, determine appropriate platforms and target audiences, prepare communication plans, write drafts, and obtain clearances prior to publication; develop or participate in the development and implementation of social media strategies for campaigns on priority issues.
  • Develop, update and implement a coherent media plan for the Section in conjunction with overarching communication goals and UNODC’s Communication Action Plan; undertake daily messaging and outreach on human trafficking and migrant smuggling issues on the HTMSS Twitter account and other social and electronic media platforms to increase visibility of the Global Programmes; draft press releases and webstories; monitor impact and report on progress; take appropriate follow-up action.
  • Cooperate and liaise closely with the UNODC Advocacy Section (AS), particularly regarding brand and messaging coherence, and also in terms of the Advocacy Section being one of the main leads in implementing the UNODC Communications Action Plan.
  • Liaise with various media service providers (artistic and technical) in Austria and other countries to organize interviews, facilitate the production of radio and television public service announcements, video news releases and other public information materials.
  • Develop multimedia content (social media videos, quote cards, GIFs, audio soundbites, podcasts); plan, schedule and disseminate social media assets using tools available (Trello, Twitter Studio); align social media with the Section’s webpage content.
  • Organize public events and work with external partners on joint advocacy initiatives; initiate and sustain professional relationships with key constituencies and UN partners; coordinate closely with UNODC’s Advocacy Section as part of the UN Global Communications Department.
  • Collect and analyze data to identify trends or patterns and provide insights through graphs, charts, tables and reports using data visualization methods to enable data-driven planning, decision-making, presentation and reporting.
  • Maintain and regularly update the Section’s website and provide other relevant content.
  • Perform other work-related duties as required.

Education Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in communications, journalism, social sciences or a related field is required.

A first-level university degree in similar fields in combination with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.

Work Experience A minimum of five years of progressively responsible professional experience in journalism, communications, media production or related fields is required.

Work experience in preparing global/international campaigns, communication plans, scripts, press releases and news videos is required.

Work experience in managing social media platforms is required.

Work experience in filming and editing short video pieces and taking photographs is required.

Experience within the United Nations system and/or a similar international organization is desirable.

Experience in data analytics or related area is desirable.

Experience in public campaigns on human trafficking and/or migrant smuggling is desirable.

Languages English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this position, fluency in English is required. Knowledge of French or Spanish is desirable. Knowledge of another United Nations official language is an advantage.

Assessment Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise and a competency-based interview.

Special Notice This is a project post. Appointment against this position is for an initial period of one year. Extension of the appointment is subject to extension of the mandate and/or the availability of the funds.
