Org. Setting and Reporting This position is located in the Corruption and Economic Crime Branch (CEB), Division for Treaty Affairs (DTA), United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), in Vienna, Austria. The incumbent will work under the direct supervision of the Chief, Corruption and Economic Crime Branch.

Responsibilities Within assigned authority, the Public Information Officer will be responsible for the following specific duties:

Take the lead in strategy, planning, development and implementation of the communications and public information elements of the Corruption and Economic Crime Branch (CEB).

Provide communications advice and expertise to the Chief, Corruption and Economic Crime Branch, Section Chiefs, and other staff on a range of public affairs issues, methods and approaches; monitor and report on developments; respond to communications-related inquiries; participate in the development, implementation and evaluation of assigned communication projects; identify problems and issues to be addressed and propose corrective actions; and identify and track follow-up actions.

Serve as the CEB outreach focal point, ensuring coherence and ‘’One-UNODC/CEB’’ voice across all programming, at HQ and in the field.

Oversee the outreach/publicity/awareness of the work carried out by CEB, including supporting global networks on anti-corruption and judicial integrity, a wide range of thematic anti-corruption workstreams covered by the Branch and the delivery of technical assistance.

Create and/or coordinate the creation of compelling content to encourage States parties and other stakeholders to become involved in anti-corruption efforts and help influence the anti-corruption debate to bring about change.

Ensure the overall communication strategy for CEB is followed, develop strategic partnerships with key constituencies to elicit support for and maximize impact of promotional objectives, and undertake coordination efforts, monitoring and reporting on progress (internally and to counterparts).

Develop, coordinate and manage creative communications across multiple media channels, with a special focus on content and the development of a shared CEB narrative in line with the CEB Communications Strategy and its Workplan to better engage key stakeholders and to raise awareness of CEB’s efforts to prevent and counter corruption around the world.

Identify opportunities for CEB and maximize the reach of CEB messaging around anti-corruption, lead on activities to promote media coverage (e.g. press conferences, interviews, press seminars and other special activities); social media outreach; and multimedia production through the management of hired experts.

Produce or oversee production of a specific type or types (e.g. print, broadcast, etc.) of communications products (e.g. press kits, press releases, feature articles, speeches, booklets, brochures, backgrounders, audio-visual materials, podcasts, etc.), to include proposing topics, undertaking research, determining appropriate medium and target audience, preparing production plans, writing drafts, obtaining clearances and finalizing texts, editing copy, and coordinating design approval, printing procedures and distribution.

Perform other work-related duties as required.

Education Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in communication, journalism, international relations, public administration or related field is required.

A first-level university degree in similar fields in combination with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.

Work Experience A minimum of seven years of progressively responsible professional work experience in public information, communications, media production, journalism, international relations, public administration or related areas is required.

Experience in managing communications campaigns, preferably at the international level, is required.

Experience in developing web and social media content is required.

Experience in monitoring and reporting on programme development is desirable.

Experience in preparing concepts, scripts and/or producing public service announcements and video news releases is desirable.

Languages English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this position, fluency in English is required. Knowledge of another UN official language is an advantage.

Special Notice This is a project post. Filling of this position is subject to funding availability and the initial appointment will be for a period of one year. Extension of the appointment is subject to extension of the mandate and/or the availability of funds.
