Org. Setting and Reporting This position is in the Public Information Section, United Nations Mission in the Republic of South Sudan (UNMISS) in Rumbek. Under the overall supervision of the Chief of Communications and Public Information, and reporting to the Head of Field Office, the Public Information Assistant shall perform the following duties:

Responsibilities •Plan, organize and implement celebratory and commemorative events for UN-related “International Days” and other events to support UNMISS peace-building activities, including producing concept notes, a PR plan to promote events and promotional materials. •Deliver UNMISS mandate presentations at workshops and other for a as required. •Gather and write news stories on UNMISS activities for the website and social media platforms through talking to a variety of sources, interview contributors, and gather background and supporting materials online and elsewhere. •Provide photography and video coverage of UNMISS activities to protect civilians and build durable peace, particularly engagement with local communities. •Gather, write, and edit news stories, interviews and provide live reports for Radio Miraya on news of importance to communities as well as UNMISS activities. •Maintain journalistic standards under deadlines and pressure; •Establish and cultivate a network of contacts and sources from all strata of South Sudanese society. •Daily and timely attendance at all meetings as directed by supervisor. •Research, compile and present basic information for use in the preparation and production of communications products and services •Participate in the planning and coordination of major exhibits; liaises with relevant departments/agencies; draft and edit reports, production schedules, press releases and related texts, and correspondence related to planning and production of exhibits. •Other duties as assigned by the supervisor

Willingness to work outside set hours and set duties when operational requirements demand. •Teamwork: Ability to work effectively in a multi-cultural, multi-ethnic environment with sensitivity and respect for diversity. Ability to develop and maintain effective communication and work relationships with supervisors and colleagues •Communication: Ability to write in a clear and concise manner and to communicate verbally in an effective manner. •Planning and Organizing: Ability to plan and organize competing and multiple priorities effectively in an efficient and timely manner. Ability to meet deadlines. •Technological awareness: Ability to operate a computer with MS applications, data bases and digital editing software. Ability to operate a digital recording device and a basic production booth.

Education High school diploma or equivalent is required. Post-secondary education at college, university or specialized training institution in office management/business administration and communications skills is an asset.

Work Experience At least 4 years of progressively responsible experience in a public information or event management environment, international broadcasting organization or a multi-lingual web site or equivalent is required A high level of demonstrated analytical and problem-solving skills is desirable Experience with UN/NGOs or other international organizations is desirable.

Languages Fluency in written and spoken English is required. Knowledge of other languages spoken in South Sudan including Arabic is an advantage.

Assessment Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise which may be followed by competency-based interview.

Candidates who have committed crimes other than minor traffic offences may not be considered for employment.
