Org. Setting and Reporting The United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) is the agency for human settlements. It is mandated by the UN General Assembly to promote socially and environmentally sustainable towns and cities with the goal of improving living conditions for all.

As our cities and towns grow at unprecedented rates, setting the social, political, cultural and environmental trends of the world, sustainable urbanization is one of the most pressing challenges for the global community in the 21st century. In 1950, one-third of the world’s population lived in cities. Just 50 years later, this proportion has risen to one-half and will continue to grow to two-thirds, or six billion people, by 2050. Cities are now home to more than half of humankind. They are the hub for national production and consumption- economic processes that generate wealth and opportunity. But they also create disease, crime, pollution and poverty.

To sustain the pace of higher economic growth, while ensuring social inclusion and avoiding adverse environmental impacts, countries need to develop policies that can ensure a comprehensive and integrated approach for sustainable expansion incl. improvements in the sectors of mobility, waste and water and sanitation.

The Urban Basic Services Section works with national governments and local authorities in developing and implementing sustainable urban development solutions by offering a comprehensive package of knowledge, advocacy tools and technical assistance including innovative urban development solutions. The branch supports UN-Habitat’s work with governments in introducing better transport systems, improving access to water and sanitation systems and in advancing solid waste management in cities.

The Public Information Assistant will support Urban Basic Services Section work in improving universal access to basic services and to achieve the relevant Sustainable Development Goals, such as SDG 6, SDG 3 and SDG 11, as well as the New Urban Agenda.

Currently, UN-Habitat is working on a project called “URBAN PATHWAYS: Supporting Low Carbon Plans for Urban Basic Services in the context of the New Urban Agenda“, which seeks to support national and local governments to develop action plans and concrete implementation measures to boost low-carbon urban development in the sectors of mobility, energy and solid waste. UN-Habitat is also supporting cities with the update of electric mobility systems under the SOLUTIONSplus project.

Furthermore, UN-Habitat is coordinating the Lake Victoria Water and Sanitation Mwanza Project (LVWATSAN), which covers the shoreline of the Lake in Tanzania and comprises the three largest towns of Mwanza, Musoma, and Bukoba. The project aims to provide policy guidance and implementation support towards enhanced water and sanitation systems for the local residents.

The Public Information Assistant is expected to support the Urban Basic Services Branch in its communication and outreach activities as well as the development of tools and knowledge products through graphic design.
