You have:
- University degree relevant to the areas of AMR, One Health, and public health among others.
- At least five years of relevant experience at national and/or international levels.
- Excellent working knowledge of English.
- Knowledge of Korean or nationality of the Republic of Korea preferred.
- Excellent understanding of multisectoral coordination in the Republic of Korea for public health issues.
- Ability to work with diverse staff in an international work environment would be an advantage.
- Excellent communication skills in English and Korean languages.
Organizational Setting
The FAO Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific is responsible for leading FAO’s response to regional priorities for food security, agriculture and rural development through the identification, planning and implementation of focused, multi-disciplinary projects and programmes. It identifies priority areas of action for the Organization in the Region, in collaboration with departments and divisions at Headquarters, and promotes the value and deliverables of the FAO’s New Strategic Framework within the context and outputs of work to help our Members achieve Better Production, Better Nutrition, a Better Environment and a Better Life for all – leaving no one behind.
The visibility of FAO’s successes in delivering its good public works within the framework of the abovementioned “Four Betters” is critical to the benefit of our Members and our resource partners. The Regional Office aims to raise visibility of its supporting role for regional policy dialogue on food security, agriculture and rural development issues and through the development, facilitation and emergence of regional Partnerships, to support capacity development and resource mobilization for food security, agriculture and rural development across the region.
At the FAO Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific, the Animal Health and Production Module is supporting delivery of the One Health Program Priority Area and the Regional Food Systems Transformation Initiative. Technical emphasis is placed on: 1) Improved Sustainable livestock production, good husbandry & farming practices including supporting the Animal Production and Health Commission for Asia and Pacific (APHCA): 2) Improved risk management, prevention and control of Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR); 3) Prevention and control of zoonotic diseases (emerging, endemic & food-borne) & transboundary animal diseases; and 4) Expanding One Health beyond animal & public health stakeholders, to be inclusive of the forestry, wildlife, natural resource management & environment sectors.
The work is focused on the Republic of Korea but as part of a regional project implemented by FAORAP, however, the incumbent will be home-based.
Reporting Lines
The incumbent will deliver tasks and outputs under the overall supervision of the Assistant FAO Representative (Programme) of FAO Partnership and Liaison Office in the Republic of Korea (PLO in ROK).
Technical Focus
To promote political commitment, good governance, and assist with developing relevant capacities across sectors to address AMR, (by sharing experiences, advocating best practices and stimulating actions) FAO in collaboration with the Tripartite is implementing a European Commission funded project “Working together to fight antimicrobial resistance (AMR)” with nine Asian countries including the Republic of Korea.
The activities relate to support for AMR national action planning, AMR surveillance, private sector engagement, research and innovation, and pandemic preparedness, with cross cutting themes of communication, sharing of best practice and capacity building.
Tasks and responsibilities
Under the direct supervision of the Assistant FAO Representative (Programme) in the FAO Partnership and Liaison Office in the Republic of Korea (PLO in ROK) and under the technical guidance of the Regional Tripartite AMR Project Coordinator (UNJP/RAS/399/EC) in FAORAP and in consultation with the regional Tripartite and EU regional and country project focal points and communication officers, the consultant will provide technical support to the “Working together to fight antimicrobial resistance (AMR)” project, the Animal Health and Production module and the One Health Regional Priority Program, to perform the following tasks: • Review the activities listed in the Republic of Korea’s work plan for 2024/25 under the UNJP/RAS/399/EC project, “Working together to fight antimicrobial resistance (AMR)” and meet with the Regional Tripartite AMR Project Coordinator and the project team to fully understand what is involved with each of the activities. • For each of the activities listed in the Republic of Korea’s work plan for 2024/25, identify: o which ministries and agencies would be most appropriate to participate in, or contribute to, the activities; o the key focal points in each ministry and agency • Based on the information above, meet and work with the focal points identified and with the project team in FAORAP to identify how the Republic of Korea might contribute to the activities and who should participate in or support the activities. • Support the Regional AMR Advocacy and Communication Specialist in collecting lessons learned and evidence on good practices in veterinary medicine, food production and public health of the region. Use this information to generate advocacy and communication materials (videos, newsletters, social media, etc.) with a One Health perspective for private sector. • In collaboration with the Regional MAR Surveillance and One Health Specialist: o organise an in-country workshop to map AMR/AMU One Health Integrated Surveillance, involving stakeholders from human, animal (terrestrial and aquatic), and environment sectors. o promote and facilitate enrolment of stakeholders including key ministries, academia, researchers to membership of FAO’s 10-year flagship initiative Reduce the Need for Antimicrobials on Farms for Sustainable Agrifood Systems Transformation (RENOFARM). • Perform any other related duties as required.
