Protection Assistant-PSS

Duty Station [Khokha -Yemen]

Who are we?

The Danish Refugee Council (DRC) has delivered humanitarian relief and development programming in Yemen since 2008. DRC focuses on supporting refugees, migrants, and people displaced by conflict and natural disasters, working especially in areas with access challenges. DRC engages in protection, emergency, WASH, and mine risk education programming among other sectors, and has hub offices in Sana'a, Aden, Hodeidah, as well as several other locations throughout Yemen.

In response to the critical and constantly evolving humanitarian situation in Yemen, DRC has assumed a leading role in coordinating response at IDP hosting sites. Working at IDP sites involves working together with international and local organizations in order to coordinate implementation of humanitarian activities, support community-based site management mechanisms, and monitor standards, needs, and gaps..

Overall purpose of the role:

The Protection Assistant (PSS) will be responsible for organizing and supervising all recreational, psychosocial support (PSS), and awareness activities for children, youth and adults within DRC’s Community Centers in Hays, as well as supervise DRC’ Community Centre Facilitators conducting the activities. The Protection Assistant (PSS) will also create a weekly schedule of activities for the center, as well as maintain the space equipped and organized, and procure materials according to needs. The Protection Assistant (PSS) will identify individuals in need of further assistance and will refer them to DRC staff for additional services.

Sector responsibilities:

  • Supervision of Community Centre Facilitators and guards/cleaner and of activities at the community center for children, youth and adults, including organizing and facilitating recreational and psychosocial support activities such as arts, sport, non-formal education, human development skills, etc.;
  • Lead the set-up and organization of spaces and materials in the community center in preparation for the recreational, psychosocial, awareness raising, and information dissemination activities;
  • Keep all documentation properly completed and filed in a safe manner (Center registration form, consent form, etc.);
  • Plan and maintain a schedule of activities at the community center, and propose new ideas for activities;
  • Ensure tracking and reporting of activity data to supervisor (Team Leader) by populating and sharing a weekly activities tracker;
  • Identifying needs for material and equipment to conduct activities and support DRC Protection Team Leader with the procurement of items;
  • Safely identify and mobilize community members to participate in activities at the community center;
  • Greet, welcome, orientate, and register clients at the community center;
  • Conducting information sharing sessions and awareness sessions in the community center on topics identified by DRC;
  • Raise awareness about the activities in the community center with the community including with community leaders and focal points;
  • Safely identify and refer members of the community who require additional assistance and services to DRC’s Case Management team and Team Leader in accordance with defined referral pathways and Standard Operating Procedures, with a particular focus on high-risk cases;
  • Read, sign, and strictly abide by the DRC Code of Conduct;
  • Must adhere to DRC’s mission, values, code of conduct including respect for the principles of neutrality, do no harm and non-discrimination;
  • Must treat all partners and beneficiaries with dignity and respect.

Experience and technical competencies:

  • Experience in facilitating recreational and psychosocial support activities;
  • Experience in leading activities for children, youth and adults;
  • Experience in leading and supervising a team;
  • Written and spoken Arabic, English is a strong advantage;
  • Effective oral communication skills;
  • Must be willing to perform tasks as required by DRC and other partner agencies if relevant.

Education :

  • University degree in social work, education, or closely related fields ; proven field experience can be accepted in lieu.

Experience and technical competencies: (include years of experience)

  • Minimum two years of experience in international and/or local NGO; ideally involved in program or in support functions (logistics, supply etc.);
  • Strong organizational skills;
  • Good conceptual understanding of gender, protection, and human rights;
  • Excellent representation, negotiation, interpersonal, and communication skills;
  • Strong team spirit and ability to work comfortably in multi-cultural contexts;
  • Excellent skills with MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint;
  • Ability to write reports and briefings in English;
  • Ability to spend extended periods of time in field conditions if required;
  • Ability to come up with innovative solutions to unexpected and challenging problems.

Education : (include, certificats, licences etc.)

•Associate degree in a Finance/Administration/IT/Social Science field any other relevant field of study) (bachelor’s degree preferred).

Language: (indicate fluency level)

  • Arabic – Fluent.
  • English – Desirable.

We offer

DRC will offer the successful applicant a contract ending on 31 September 2022, renewable based on both funding and performance.

Duty Station (Khokha-Yemen)

Salary and conditions will be in accordance with Danish Refugee Council’s Terms of Employment. This position will be placed at Band (NMI), level (1) and will be reporting to Protection Team Leader.
