What we look for

We are looking for a Prosthetist - Orthotist (P&O) with international experience!

What we do

The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) works worldwide to provide humanitarian assistance to people affected by conflict and armed violence. We take action in response to emergencies and at the same time promote respect for international humanitarian law. We are an independent and neutral organization, and our mandate stems essentially from the Geneva Conventions of 1949. We work closely with National Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies and with their International Federation to ensure a concerted, rational and rapid humanitarian response to the needs of the victims of armed conflict or any other situation of internal violence. We direct and coordinate the international activities conducted in these situations.

People with disabilities are among the most vulnerable and socially excluded groups in communities affected by conflict. That is why the main objective of the ICRC's Physical Rehabilitation Programme (PRP) is ensuring access to physical rehabilitation – which entails provision of physiotherapy and mobility devices (prostheses, orthoses, walking aids and wheelchairs).

Your role

This position involves supervising the provision of prosthetic and orthotic services including the manufacture of prostheses and orthoses, providing clinical and technical mentoring and support to national personnel working in P&O projects, providing support in the management of physical rehabilitation activities as well as setting up new P&O centres when required. As a member of the physical rehabilitation multidisciplinary team, you will contribute to the implementation of internal and international P&O standards, service provision standards and supervise the quality of the services provided (from registration of the service user though to discharge from the service).

Main responsibilities

  • Promote best practices in coordination with the PRP team and support the Physical Rehabilitation Centre (PRC) and Project Managers in the implementation of guidelines and standards
  • Collaborate with all members of the rehabilitation team to ensure a multidisciplinary team approach is followed
  • Train and mentor freshly graduated students and support related activities
  • Provide support to the staff to perform detailed quality control procedures
  • Coordinate the provision of P&O and wheelchair services within supported PRC
  • Discuss, communicate, and report on the physical rehabilitation context, needs, and programs

Education and experience required

  • Strongly motivated by the humanitarian field
  • Recognized training as a prosthetist orthotist (Previously ISPO Cat.1 or equivalent)
  • Additional relevant degrees (e.g., pedorthics, biomechanics, education) are an asset
  • Minimum of three years of professional experience in the provision of prosthetic and orthotic services
  • Fluency in English. A good command of a second language is a strong asset (French, Arabic, Russian, Portuguese)

Desired profile and skills

  • Able to work under pressure and lead a multicultural team
  • Previous experience in international humanitarian projects
  • Positive, flexible and able to adapt to challenging living conditions and/or unstable security environment
  • Previous experience within the Red Cross & Red Crescent movement is an asset

Our operational context

  • In line with the principle of neutrality, the ICRC does not assign personnel to a country of which they are nationals
  • Our field staff members must be in good health and will have to do a medical check-up prior to departure in the field
  • Our field staff members are prepared to accept unaccompanied postings (i.e. no spouse, partner, children or dependents) for at least the first 24 months
  • In line with our security guidelines, our staff members must hold a manual driving license

Our offer in a nutshell

  • Rewarding work in a humanitarian and multicultural environment
  • A two-week orientation course and other opportunities for further in-house training
  • A competitive employment package with attractive social benefits
  • Accommodation provided and paid by the ICRC
  • Be part of the ICRC talent pool and be contacted for future assignments globally
  • Length of assignment: 12 months or longer
