This is a UNV National Specialist contract. This kind of contract is known as National UN Volunteer. It is normally only for nationals. More about UNV National Specialist contracts.

This position is with the UNODC Global Maritime Crime Programme (GMCP), in Colombo, Sri Lanka in the UNODC Regional Office for South Asia (ROSA) but is physically based within the Department of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (DFAR). The incumbent will perform his/her duties and responsibilities under the direct supervision DFAR with monthly reporting to the Programme Coordinator/Officer (Indian Ocean East Region) supporting the activities Global Maritime Crime Programme

Within the delegated authority and under the supervision of DFAR or his/her designated mandated representative(s), the UNV Project Support Officer will:

• Support the conduct of research and collation of information on maritime crime related to the fishing sector and the impact on Sri Lanka.

• Contribute with substantive support for policy coordination and evaluation functions, including the review and analysis of emerging issues and trends, participation in evaluations or research activities and studies;

• Contribute to the preparation of various written outputs, e.g. draft background papers, briefing notes, analytical notes, sections of reports and studies, inputs to publications, etc., relating to maritime crime issues in the region;

• Contribute to the Fisheries Resources Management to ensure the sustainability of the fisheries Sector.

• Provide support to identify mitigation measures of Post-harvest loss of fisheries productions and enhance the quality of fish production.

• Provide support to develop alternative livelihood opportunities to reroute the direct fisheries employment targeting value addition of fish products and

• Integration of Fisheries with other economic sectors(i.e.-Tourism) or programs (i.e.- national nutrition enhancement, entrepreneurship etc.) or activities.

• Provide support to DFAR in order to enhance the economy related to fisheries to achieve a higher contribution to the GDP from fisheries.

• Provide support to DFAR in order to enhance Socio economic development of the fisheries communities.

• Any other related tasks as may be required or assigned by the supervisor.

Colombo is situated on the Western Province of Sri Lanka and is the commercial capital of the country. Colombo is located on the west coast of the island and adjacent to the administrative capital, Sri Jayawardenepura, Kotte. The climate is temperate all throughout the year but humidity is usually high. From March to April the temperature averages around 31 degrees Celsius (88 degrees Fahrenheit). The only major change in the Colombo weather occurs during the monsoon seasons from May to August and October to January when heavy rainfalls occur. Sri Lanka became a member of the United Nations on 14 December 1955.
