This position is located in the UNODC Global Maritime Crime Programme (GMCP) office, in Maputo, Mozambique in the UNODC Regional Office for Southern Africa (ROSAF). The in-cumbent will perform his/her duties and responsibilities under the direct supervision of the Pro-gramme Coordinator (Indian Ocean Region) supporting the activities of Global Maritime Crime Programme.

Under the direct supervision of the Programme Coordinator (Indian Ocean Region), the UN Volunteer will assist in the implementation of activities that are carried out under the “Maritime Crime Programme - Regional Coordination” in matters related to maritime crime and in particu-lar the UN Volunteer will undertake the following tasks: • Contribute to the planning, organization, implementation and monitoring of the UNODC GMCP support activities to enhance maritime law enforcement capabilities for interdictions and investigations in Mozambique and the wider Indian Ocean dealing with maritime crime matters; including assessments, course development, infrastructural and equipment sup-port, workshops, training and mentoring, and logistical matters associated with project im-plementation. • Conduct assessment and review of existing maritime law enforcement capabilities to coun-ter all forms of maritime crime, including maritime terrorism, to better inform the delivery of targeted interventions. • Coordinate activities of the Indian Ocean Forum for Maritime Crime sub-groups, the Southern Route Partnership in particular, by arranging regular coordination events to en-sure collaboration on maritime interdiction operations in the region. • Engage with and build networks of national and regional counterparts as well as interna-tional partners working within the maritime domain in Mozambique and the wider Indian Ocean region. • Organize, coordinate and attend workshops on maritime security matters.
• Prepare and draft a variety of written progress reports, mission reports, brief-ings/presentations, policy proposals and documents, summary reports etc.

• Provide administrative and substantive support to the GMCP programme coordinator in view of consultative and other meetings, workshops, conferences, etc., including proposing agenda topics, identifying and proposing participants, preparing background documents and presentations, handling logistics, etc.

• Assist the GMCP programme coordinator with administrative processes related to the pro-curement of equipment and services in line with UN financial rules and regulations; 
 • Support field missions to locations in the region where GMCP carries out programme activ-ities, including provision of substantive and administrative support, data collection, etc.; 
 • Perform any other duties as required/assigned.

• Minimum of 5 years work experience in the field of Marine safety and maritime affairs, in-ternational law or international maritime law; • Experience in the conduct of research and/or working with transnational organised, piracy and small island states is required;. 
 • Experience in the management and implementation of project activity. • Experience in organizing regional and international conferences.
 • Experience in volunteerism is an asset

Mozambique has a total population of about 29 million people and is located on the southeast coast of Africa. To the East, is the Indian Ocean, Tanzania, Malawi and Zambia is to the north, to the west is Zimbabwe and South Africa and to the South, Swaziland and South Africa. The total area of Mozambique is 799 380 Km square from North to South. It is tropical hot and humid. The hottest and wettest months in Maputo are December to February, when the average daily minimum temperatures are around 22°c and the average daily highs of 30°c. The rain season is between October and April. Winters (June to August) are mild with the average daily temperature ranging from 13°c to 24°c. Basic health facilities and food are available everywhere. The security situation is reliable, but some precaution is needed at the same time. Communication and transport services are available at various costs. Regarding accommodation and food, houses and apartments can be rented from US$ 600 to US$ 1,000 per month and meals at the restaurant cost between US$ 10 and US$ 30. Food, household commodities and clothing can be found in shops and local markets at reasonable prices. An entry visa is required for all travelers and must be obtained from Mozambican Embassy prior to travelling. The metical is the local currency and exchange rate stands at USD 1 equivalent to about 62 meticais (MZM) as per July 2021. Commercial banks are operational in the country and Visa cards are accepted in hotels. Maputo is categorized as a family duty station offering a variety of different accommodation options. It has a vibrant international community whilst also providing excellent opportunities to work in a national, Mozambican context.
