Org. Setting and Reporting The UN’s 75th anniversary in 2020-21 coincided with perhaps the biggest global crisis since the founding of the United Nations. As we emerge from the pandemic, there is broad consensus that we need to reset the foundations and core values underpinning collective action so as to ensure a global recovery from COVID-19, accelerate efforts to achieve Agenda 2030, and put in place a more inclusive, networked and effective multilateralism necessary to deliver critical global public goods now and in the future, and to keep our promises to current and succeeding generations. The UN General Assembly has mandated the Secretary General to do exactly that with a report prior to the conclusion of the 75th session in September containing “recommendations to advance our common agenda and to respond to current and future challenges.” (A/RES/75/1). Pursuant to that mandate, the Secretary-General has launched a profound process of reflection on the future of multilateralism with inputs from diverse thought leaders across the agenda’s twelve themes, from young thinkers, interactive and inclusive participation by civil society and the private sector, and consultations with UN Member States, as well as an internal consolidation and deepening of UN reform efforts.
