The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment. UNEP’s Policy and Programme Division (PPD) consolidates the policy, programme, monitoring, gender and social safeguards functions of UNEP as well as its engagement with the United Nations system and key global processes such as the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, the Sustainable Development Goals and other landmark global policy decisions in the context of the UN Development System (UNDS) reform.

This International UNV assignment is part of the Subprogramme Coordination Unit (SPCU) of UNEP’s Policy and Programme Division, supporting work under Nature Strategic objective thematic area across all seven subprogrammes and its interlinkages with the Climate and Pollution strategic objectives thematic areas, including tracking outputs and results contributing to the delivery of GBF, reporting internally and externally to Member States and stakeholders, and supporting all areas of the Nature Action programme coordination workflow.

Under the direct supervision of the Nature Action the IUNV is responsible for the following sub programme related duties: • Provide support to the coordination of the subprogramme coherence internally (i.e., across the interventions within the subprogramme), across Divisions and Regional Offices, and across other subprogrammes (to ensure common delivery of the strategic objectives on climate, nature, and pollution) including the alignment of subprogrammes with the emerging strategic directions from MEAs processes.

• Undertake cross-mapping of Nature action’s and any other relevant Programmes’ associated projects results with the targets of the GBF.

• Collect, analyze, and interpret on a regular basis data related to the implementation of Nature Action Programme Coordination Projects (PCPs) with particular focus on delivery of GBF to support monitoring and reporting of higher-level results.

• Monitor and analyze specific aspects (e.g., GBF implementation) of programme/project development and implementation and follow-up with project teams on their reporting requirements as necessary.

• Assist in analyzing and visualizing PCPs data relevant to achieving Nature Strategic objective, and support knowledge sharing on GBF implementation and programmatic websites.

• Conducting research and analysis on specific cross cutting elements, including GBF across different programmes within the framework of the new programmatic approach. • Undertake research on current and emerging trends and prepare analytical summaries that can support strategic planning for support of Member States to put their ambitious targets under the historic Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework into action and guide the implementation and communication of UNEP Nature Strategic Objective.

• Support the process of cooperation and synergies between biodiversity and other MEAs in implementation of the KM-GBF facilitated by Nature Action Subprogramme coordinators.

• Assist Nature Action subprogramme coordinators in their Strategic engagement and facilitation of collective action of UN system entities to support the on delivery of KM-GBF.

• Develop and maintain a generic database for programme performance tracking, including status of project development and approvals, revisions, evaluations, and closures and populate this with historical data as well as new data.

• Support the review of project proposals prepared by divisions that contribute to the Nature Action PCPs with a view to ensuring consistency with the PCPs’ ToCs and Project Review Committee checklist, to improve project design quality and strategic alignment prior to project submission for approval.

• Contribute to the preparation of contracts, terms of reference, proofing of drafts and selected inputs, such as success stories and lessons learnt, draft background papers, analytical notes, websites, and social media networks, etc.

• Provide administrative and meeting support to all Subprogramme coordination functions and/or Subprogramme Coordinators Unit activities (e.g. organizing retreats/workshops/administration etc) when required.

• Provide flexible and ad hoc support to Nature Action subprogramme coordinators (Global and Regional) in various duties related to GBF, as well as on overall delivery of Nature Strategic objective, as and when required. • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Furthermore, UN Volunteers are required to:

•Strengthen their knowledge and understanding of the concept of volunteerism by reading relevant UNV and external publications and take active part in UNV activities (for instance in events that mark International Volunteer Day). •Be acquainted with and build on traditional and/or local forms of volunteerism in the host country. •Reflect on the type and quality of voluntary action that they are undertaking, including participation in ongoing reflection activities. •Contribute articles/write-ups on field experiences and submit them for UNV publications/websites, newsletters, press releases, etc. •Assist with the UNV Buddy Programme for newly arrived UN Volunteers. •Promote or advise local groups in the use of online volunteering or encourage relevant local individuals and organizations to use the UNV Online Volunteering service whenever technically possible.

•Professionalism: Knowledge of science-based solutions to the respective subprogramme. Ability to generate and communicate clearly links between the Organization's strategy and the Subprogramme goals. Ability to analyze and interpret data in support of decision-making and convey resulting information to management. Shows pride in work and in achievements. Allocates appropriate amount of time and resources for completing work. Foresees risks and allows for contingencies when planning. Monitors and adjusts plans and actions as necessary. •Teamwork: Work collaboratively with colleagues. Solicit input by genuinely valuing others’ ideas. Place team agenda before personal agenda. Support group decisions. Share credit, joint responsibility for shortcomings.

the area of biodiversity and ecosystem management (required). • Good understanding and demonstrated experience with biodiversity-related Multilateral environment agreements and processes such as Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) (required). • Demonstrated ability to understand and analyse information and derive relevant findings and understanding of the science underpinning environmental issues (required). • Familiarity with data and indicators, database management and data visualization (desired). • Experience in programme/project management and implementation at all phases of the programme/project development cycle. Knowledge of project cycle management and results-based reporting (desired). • Ability to communicate in additional UN language professionally (desired). • Excellent interpersonal skills and demonstrated ability to perform in a team and deliver on time (desired). • Ability to work effectively in a multicultural team of international and national personnel with sensitivity and respect for diversity, including gender (desired). • Computer skills: proficiency in MS Word, Power Bi, Excel and PowerPoint (required).

The country’s GNP per capita estimated at purchasing power parity (PPP) is $975, and the GNP is growing at an average rate of 0.1% annually. More than 26% of Kenya’s people live below the international poverty line of $1 per day. Kenya’s main food crops are “maize, wheat, pulses, roots and tubers.” (FAO).

Nairobi is a modern metropolitan city where most basic goods and services, health facilities, public transport, telecommunication and banking services and educational facilities are readily available. The city is widely connected through its main airport, Jomo Kenyatta International Airport and the smaller Wilson Airport. Air transport is also available to many up-country destinations. The city is home to some 3,000 UN personnel mainly attributed to the fact that it serves as the headquarters for both the UN HABITAT and UNEP.

The socio-economic and cultural background of the immediate society the UNV would be living and working in is diverse and prevailing security conditions at the place of assignment is modest. The topographic and climatic features of the assignment location is highland cool and warm tropical climate.
