Background

UN Women, grounded in the vision of equality enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations, works for the elimination of discrimination against women and girls; the empowerment of women; and the achievement of equality between women and men as partners and beneficiaries of development, human rights, humanitarian action and peace and security.

UN Women at the global level focuses its activities on 5 areas of interventions:

  • Increase women’s leadership and political participation;
  • Develop women’s economic empowerment;
  • Ending violence against women;
  • Increase women’s leadership in peace, security and humanitarian action;
  • Introduce planning and Gender Responsive Budget.

In a separate initiative, UN Women launched the global program "Safe and Inclusive Cities for Women and Girls" in partnership with AECID, UN-Habitat, leading women's organizations, and over 50 global and local partners. This program operates in five pilot cities: Quito (Ecuador), New Delhi (India), Kigali (Rwanda), Port Moresby (Papua New Guinea), and Cairo (Egypt). It aims to develop, implement, and evaluate tools, policies, and comprehensive approaches with measurable impacts to prevent and respond to sexual harassment and other forms of sexual violence against women and girls (SVAWG) in public spaces. For the first time, on June 24, 2021, the municipality of Tunis officially joined the global UN Women "Safe City" program, reaffirming its commitment to women's rights.

Under these two programs, the UN Women Program Presence Office based in Tunis, Tunisia, is looking for a Programme intern for a three-month period to support tasks including assisting in the implementation of the Ajyal Egalite and Tunis Safe City Programmes, providing administrative and logistics support in program management.

Duties and Responsibilities

. Provide support to the formulation of Ajyal Egalite and Tunis Safe City Programmes.

  • Support the implementation of programme activities;
  • Support in identifying sources, gathering and compiling data and information for the preparation of documents, guidelines, speeches and position papers, in collaboration with the Programme team.

Provide administrative inputs to the management of the Ajyal Egalite and Tunis Safe City Programmes.

  • Provide administrative support in monitoring and preparation of invoices of programmes/projects;
  • Support in the preparation of PO packages for development projects events as required;

    Provide inputs to advocacy, knowledge building/sharing and communication efforts

  • Assist in providing technical inputs to background documents, briefs and presentations related to gender response;

  • Support in the organization of advocacy activities and campaigns events, trainings, workshops and knowledge products ;
  • Proofread English and Arabic translated documents and assist with translation or interpretation as required.
  • Support the organization of local and regional events under the Ajyal Egalite and Tunis Safe City Programmes, with a particular focus on logistics.
  • Support the Communications Assistant to prepare media posts by providing the needed description of events related to programmes.

Provide administrative support to the Ajyal Egalite and Tunis Safe City Programmes

  • Support logistical, administrative and financial arrangements for the organization of meetings, workshops, events, and missions;
  • Draft minutes in meetings as required;
  • Assemble briefing materials and prepare power-point and other presentations, in collaboration with the Ajyal Egalite and Tunis Safe City Programmes team;
  • Support in organizing and coordination of filing of documents and maintaining mailing lists;
  • Perform any other communication, administrative and logistical duties as requested by the Ajyal Egalite and Tunis Safe City Programmes team

Required Skills and Experience

Education

• University studies in one of the following disciplines: gender studies, human rights, international relations, Journalism School, NGO Management or other relevant subjects is required. or other relevant subjects is required.

• Meet one of the following:

  • Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher);
  • Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor's level or equivalent);
  • Have graduated with a university degree and, if selected, must commence the internship within a one-year period of graduation; or Be enrolled in a postgraduate professional traineeship program which is part of a degree programme and undertake the internship as part of the program requirements.

Language

• Excellent communication skills (written and oral) in English and Arabic are required.

• Working knowledge of French is an advantage.

Renumeration: Interns who are not in receipt of financial support from other sources such as universities or other institutions will receive a stipend from UN Women to partially subsidize their basic living costs for the duration of the internship.
