This is a UNV National Specialist contract. This kind of contract is known as National UN Volunteer. It is normally only for nationals. More about UNV National Specialist contracts.

Eligibility criteria

Minimum age: 22 years old. Applicants must be nationals of or legal residents in the country of assignment.

Description of task

Under the direct supervision of the Peace and Security Specialist, the UN Volunteer will undertake the following tasks:

  1. Contribute technically to the development of programme strategies in the area of Disaster Risk Reduction in Kenya.
  • Provide substantive inputs to the design and formulation of programme/ project proposals and initiatives.
  • Support to translate the priorities of the Strategic Note into programme interventions on DRR.
  • Identify areas for support and interventions related to the DRR programme.
  1. Provide Substantive Technical support to the implementation and management of DRR Programme.
  • Provide technical inputs to the annual workplan and budget.
  • Support in the implementation of programme activities in DRR.
  • Support the coordination of the call/request for proposals, evaluate partners proposals, including the organization of technical review committees, and capacity assessment of partners.
  • Review, coordinate and monitor the submission of implementing partner financial and narrative reports.
  1. Provide technical assistance and capacity development to DRR programme partners.
  • Provide technical and policy support to country office in developing and strengthening projects/ programmes in DRR.
  • Maintain relationships with national partners to support implementation and expansion of the DRR programme.
  • Identify opportunities for capacity building of partners and facilitate technical/ programming support and trainings to partners, as needed.
  • Participate in capacity assessment to identify capacity building needs of stakeholders.
  • Lead the coordination of technical assistance, mentoring, training and capacity development initiatives to partners.
  1. Provide technical inputs to the monitoring and reporting of the DRR programme.
  • Monitor progress of implementation of activities and finances using results-based management tools.
  • Undertake field visits to monitor performance of commitments by implementing partners and ensure programme objectives are being met.
  • Draft reports on monitoring missions, programme results, outputs and outcomes.
  • Provide substantive inputs to the preparation of donor and UN Women reports relating to DRR.
  1. Provide substantive technical inputs to the management of people and finances of the DRR programme.
  • Monitor budget implementation and make budget re-alignments/ revisions, as necessary.
  • Provide substantive inputs to financial reports.
  1. Provide substantive inputs to building partnerships and resource mobilization strategies.
  • Support to develop and implement partnerships and resource mobilization strategies; analyze and maintain information and databases.
  • Analyze and research information on donors, prepare substantive briefs on possible areas of cooperation, identification of opportunities for cost sharing.
  • Prepare relevant documentation such as project summaries, conference papers, briefing notes, speeches, and donor profiles.
  • Participate in donor meetings and public information events, as delegated.
  1. Provide technical support to inter-agency coordination on DRR to systematically integrate gender and social inclusion.
  • Provide substantive technical support to the Representative and Deputy Representative on inter-agency coordination related activities by drafting background reports and briefs.
  • Represent UN Women in inter-agency coordination related activities by attending meetings, events, participating in groups and committees as needed and providing substantive inputs- UNDAF.
  • Advocate for the engagement and participation of local organizations and civil society networks in DRR coordination mechanisms.
  1. Provide substantive inputs to advocacy, knowledge building and communication efforts
  • Develop background documents, briefs and presentations related to gender in DRR.
  • Coordinate and organize advocacy campaigns, events, trainings, workshops, and knowledge products.
  • Coordinate the development of knowledge management methodologies, and products on gender in DRR.
  • Support UN Women’s participation in policy dialogues on issues related to DRR as necessary.
  • Support to develop advocacy strategies and oversee their implementation.
  • Identify best practices and lessons learned to guide programme improvement and strategy planning.
  • Contribute to develop knowledge management strategies, products, and methodologies on DRR programme.

Qualifications/Requirements

Required degree level:

Master degree or equivalent

Education - Additional Comments:

  • Master’s degree in Humanitarian Action, Disaster Risk Reduction, Peace And Security, Conflict Resolution, Gender and Development, Development Studies, Political Sciences, Policy or related disciplines
    • A first-level university degree in combination with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.

Required experience:

24 Months

Experience remark:

  • A minimum of 2 years of relevant work experience at the community or national level in project management for development projects- implementation, coordination, monitoring and evaluation, donor reporting and capacity building;
  • Experience in gender DRR/humanitarian action.
  • Relevant professional experience delivering capacity building training to government and non-government actors on gender equality, women’s empowerment, and DRR;
  • Experience coordinating and liaising with UN agencies, government (National and County level) and civil society

Language skills:

  • English(Mandatory), Level - Fluent
  • Kiswahili(Optional), Level - Working Knowledge
