Contract

This is a UNV National Youth contract. This kind of contract is known as National UN Volunteer. It is normally only for nationals. More about UNV National Youth contracts.

UNICEF works in some of the world’s toughest places, to reach the world’s most disadvan-taged children. To save their lives. To defend their rights. To help them fulfil their potential. The fundamental mission of UNICEF is to promote the rights of every child, everywhere, in everything the organization does — in programs, in advocacy, and operations. The equity strategy, emphasizing the most disadvantaged and excluded children and families, translates this commitment to children’s rights into action. The UNV will be working with the Child Protection section in ESARO. The IUNV will support the regional Child protection section to contribute to the realization of the SDGs, in particular Goals 5.1, 5.2, 5.3 (gender equality, violence against children, harmful practices), and 16.2 (access to justice). Across the region, we are working closely with governments, civil society partners, research institutions, private sector and other UN agencies to build strong child protection systems to prevent and mitigate harm for children and to ensure that if and when they are harmed, they get the needed care and protection to recover.

UNICEF ESARO is a part of the UNFPA-UNICEF Global Programme to End Child Marriage which focuses on girls’ empowerment, supports households with positive social norms change, strengthens systems that deliver services to adolescent girls; ensure that laws and policies protect and promote the rights of adolescent girls, and develop robust data to inform policies and programmes to end child marriage. The Regional Office is also a part of the UNFPA-UNICEF Joint Programme on the Elimination of Female Genital Mutilation. We are working to eliminate the practice through various approaches on prevention, access to services, and social and behaviour change related to the practice and empowerment of girls and boys. UNICEF ESARO supports countries in the region in their work with governments, children, parents/caregivers, community members and partners to prevent and respond to all forms of violence against children (VAC) in all contexts. At the regional level, UNICEF plays a pivotal role in establishing regional alliances and setting technical guidance to comprehensively address VAC.

The UNV will specifically support UNICEF Regional Office (RO) in implementation of programmes for addressing harmful practices and ending violence against children (EVAC) in the ESA region. The UNV will also have regular interactions with UNICEF Country Offices (CO’s), UNFPA ESARO and regional partners. The UN Volunteer will undertake the following tasks: Documentation & knowledge management: Develop periodic regional newsletter on up-dates/good practices in the thematic areas of harmful practices and EVAC, compile updates from countries and relevant research in the area of harmful practices and EVAC, develop and manage UNICEF SharePoint as a knowledge hub for relevant resources Data Analysis: Support in analyzing existing regional and global data and research to inform country specific programming and policy advocacy efforts. Coordination: Support in regular coordination across different sectors at RO, CO’s implementing child marriage, FGM and EVAGBW prevention and response programmes. Support the Regional CP Specialist in coordination with regional organizations/ institutions/ partners to align efforts and strategies to end harmful practices and violence against children. Communication materials: Create content for regional meetings/webinars (meeting Save the date, invites, agenda), advocacy and information dissemination. Furthermore, UN Volunteers are required to: •Strengthen their knowledge and understanding of the concept of volunteerism by reading relevant UNV and external publications and take active part in UNV activities (for instance in events that mark International Volunteer Day); •Be acquainted with and build on traditional and/or local forms of volunteerism in the host country. •Reflect on the type and quality of voluntary action that they are undertaking, including participation in ongoing reflection activities. •Contribute articles/write-ups on field experiences and submit them for UNV publications/websites, newsletters, press releases, etc. •Assist with the UNV Buddy Programme for newly arrived UN Volunteers. •Promote or advise local groups in the use of online volunteering or encourage relevant local individuals and organizations to use the UNV Online Volunteering service whenever technically possible.
