This is a UNV National Youth contract. This kind of contract is known as National UN Volunteer. It is normally only for nationals. More about UNV National Youth contracts.

This UNV assignment is a part of the Spotlight Initiative which is a global initiative of the United Nations which has received generous support from the European Union. It is a multi-year program that addresses all forms of violence against women and girls (VAWG), and harmful practices. It follows a transformative and evidence-based approach, addressing unequal power relations between men and women and focusing on gender equality and women’s empowerment, as well as ending impunity for VAWG. In line with the principles of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, the Initiative will follow a human rights-based approach and take into consideration the specific needs of women and girls who experience multiple and intersecting forms of discrimination and uphold the principle of “leaving no one behind.”

The Spotlight Initiative aims to support transformative change on the ground to end violence against women and girls, in numerous countries globally, including Guyana. The initiative comes with the highest level of commitment globally and is governed by the UN Deputy Secretary-General and the Vice President of the EU Commission.

This position is in line with the spirit of the UN Reform that promotes joint UN work to support countries to deliver on the 2030 Agenda as well as the EU/UN Spotlight Initiative. The National UN Volunteer Specialist will work closely with the Programme Coordinator to support the overall implementation of the Spotlight Programme in Guyana.

Within the delegated authority and under the supervision of RCO/Spotlight, the UNV Programme Support Officer will:

• Ensure that members are kept up to date with programme progress and activities, and that meetings are planned, resourced, and documented effectively. • Assist with coordination and organisation of travel (incl. overseas), schedules and accommodation for team. • Draft agendas and take minutes at meetings ensuring actions are captured and communicated clearly and promptly. • Support Program Management with tracking, reconciling, and reporting on budget and expenditure. • Follow up on deadlines, commitments made, actions taken and coordination of collection and submission of the reports to Spotlight Secretariat. • Any other related tasks as may be required or assigned by the supervisor.

Results/expected outputs:

As an active Spotlight Initiative, Guyana team member, efficient, timely, responsive, client-friendly, and high-quality support rendered to Spotlight Initiative, Guyana, and its beneficiaries in the accomplishment of her/his functions is required including:

• Timely and accurate financial transactions, reports, and documentation completed. • Timely and effective organization of a regional Spotlight/GBV event hosted by the Government of Guyana

• Professionalism: demonstrated understanding of operations relevant to UNDP; technical capabilities or knowledge relevant or transferrable to UNDP procedures and rules; discretion, political sensitivity, diplomacy and tact to deal with clients; ability to apply good judgement; ability to liaise and coordinate with a range of different actors, especially in senior positions; where appropriate, high degree of autonomy, personal initiative and ability to take ownership; resourcefulness and willingness to accept wide responsibilities and ability to work independently under established procedures; ability to manage information objectively, accurately and confidentially; responsive and client-oriented; • Integrity: demonstrate the values and ethical standards of the UN and UNDP in daily activities and behaviours while acting without consideration of personal gains; resist undue political pressure in decision-making; stand by decisions that are in the organization’s interest even if they are unpopular; take prompt action in cases of unprofessional or unethical behaviour; does not abuse power or authority; • Teamwork and respect for diversity: ability to operate effectively across organizational boundaries; excellent interpersonal skills; ability to establish and maintain effective partnerships and harmonious working relations in a multi-cultural, multi-ethnic, mixed-gender environment with sensitivity and respect for diversity; sensitivity and adaptability to culture, gender, religion, nationality, and age; commitment to implementing the goal of gender equality by ensuring the equal participation and full involvement of women and men in all aspects of UN operations; ability to achieve common goals and provide guidance or training to colleagues; • Genuine commitment towards the principles of voluntary engagement, which includes solidarity, compassion, reciprocity and self-reliance; and commitment towards UNDP’s mission and vision, as well as to the UN Core Values.

and/or demonstrated interest in development programmes and events or campaign management; • Excellent oral and written skills; excellent drafting, formulation, reporting skills; • Excellent organizational skills including meeting and event organization; • Excellent interpersonal skills; culturally and socially sensitive; ability to work inclusively and collaboratively with a range of partners, including grassroots community members, religious and youth organizations, and authorities at different levels; familiarity with tools and approaches of communications for development; • Solid overall computer literacy, including proficiency in various MS Office applications (Excel, Word, etc.) and email/internet; familiarity with database management; and office technology equipment; • Self-motivated, ability to work with minimum supervision; ability to work with tight deadlines; • Have affinity with or interest in development programmes, volunteerism as a mechanism for durable development, and the UN System.

Located in the Northern part of South America, Guyana the “land of many waters” is a unique blend of Caribbean and South American culture and history. With 965 miles of navigable rivers, 83% of Guyana is covered by pristine rainforest. The country is bordered by the Atlantic Coastline on the northeast, Venezuela on the west, Suriname on the east and Brazil on the West and South. The national language in Guyana is English.
