Role Summary
Role Summary
We are looking for an Economic Policy Advisor to join the 10-person Economic Policy & Public Finance team. This sits within the 80-strong Policy and Politics division in London, where radical-yet-practical new polices are incubated and tested. We generate forward-looking analysis that shapes public debate, enhances the work of client governments, and supports partnerships which improve people’s lives. Our work is global in nature, but we also develop individual national strategies, including our flagship Future of Britain programme.
The remit of the team is broad and the successful candidate will help develop the Institute’s policy on a wide and diverse range of issues. In recent months, the team has delivered significant public interventions including around the potential for technology to help boost economic growth and deliver more efficient and higher-quality public services. You will work closely with other teams in the Policy and Politics division – including on science & technology, government innovation, net zero, health, and geopolitics – to ensure the overall policy package we develop is coherent and analytically robust. Taken together, you will help ensure TBI is seen as a trusted provider of forward-looking, politically-relevant economic thought leadership by Heads of Government, Opposition Leaders, Finance Ministers and their teams.
Policy Advisors in TBI are mid-senior level grades and suit individuals with several years experience in their field who are able to work autonomously and provide thought leadership.
This role reports to a Senior Economic Policy Advisor and will also work closely with the Director for Economic Policy.

Key Responsibilities
- Policy development – You will use your analytical expertise, knowledge of technology and policy nous to develop original proposals to influence the policy debate in the UK and overseas. That could include working on new ways to unlock economic growth, improve the public finances, or deliver other societal outcomes such as improving healthcare or education. This will require generating solutions yourself as well as working closely with other policy teams and tech specialists to ensure the Institute is tapping the frontier of knowledge.
- Economic Analysis – You will have a quantitative mindset, be skilled in a range of analytical techniques and be keen to deploy them to help quantify the potential impact of different policy choices on the economy. You will enjoy innovativing and will develop novel analytical solutions to issues that have proved intractable in the past. You will also be supported to further develop your quantitative skills by seeking out training opportunities and encouraged to develop partnerships with other frontier researchers outside the Institute.
- Communicating with impact – You will help produce high-quality published reports that communicate the costs and benefits of different policy choices in a credible and accessible way for political leaders. You will also help represent the Institute externally on economic policy, including by joining policy panels, conferences and policy workshops.
- Collaboration – You will take an entrepreneurial approach to your work, seeking out opportunities to work with other policy, advisory and strategy teams across the Institute to develop TBI’s reputation for thought-leadership on economic policy around the world. This will include supporting other teams with economic analysis for specific country clients as well as delivering joint-pieces of research for a global audience.
- Project Management – You will be comfortable working autonomously, able to take the lead on long-term research projects while also managing shorter term requests flexibly.
Person Specification
The ideal candidate will be a self starter, who is eager to combine their quantitative analytical skills, knowledge of technology, and political judgement to generate well-evidenced, radical but practical economic policy solutions. You will have some specialist knowledge of a particular policy area, sector or technology - garnered through previous work experience in quantitative roles linked to economic policy. Given the broad remit of the team, you will enjoy working on a variety of topics and be adept at upskilling quickly on new issues and policy areas. We are especially looking for candidates who are creative, technically skilled and able to think big.
The successful candidate will:
- Have a strong academic background in economics or a related quantitative discipline such as operational research or data science (at least to Bachelors degree or equivalent)
- Have applied experience of producing impactful economic analysis in government, a central bank, international institution, policy organisation, economic consultancy or other private sector roles
- Be familiar with a range of quantitative techniques (e.g. econometrics, macroeconomic modelling, time series analysis, machine learning, network analysis, or geospatial analysis) statistical software (e.g. Stata, R, Python) and be a skilled user of Microsoft Excel
- Be an enthusiastic user of new technology for analytical research, including the use of artificial intelligence as a productivity enhancing tool
- Have a strong ability to communicate complex economic issues in an easily digestible manner, including to the TBI senior team, political leaders and the media
- Have a collaborative mindset and excellent interpersonal and networking skills
- Possess a keen interest in politics, policy and technology and a passion for using innovative economic analysis to produce radical but practical progressive policy solutions
The following attributes are desirable:
- Further study in Economics, to Masters level (or equivalent) or beyond.
- One or more of the following:
- Applied experience of using scenario analysis and forecasting models to explore the impact of long-term structural trends, including developments in technology, and their potential impact on the economy and public finances.
- Applied experience of working on international economic issues, including trade, investment or migration in a professional context.
- Expertise working with AI-era technology and experience of analysing its potential impact on the economy.
