Result of Service - Broadcast-quality podcast season of 6 episodes of approximately 20 – 25 minutes duration each highlighting unique narratives from members of the IPBES community (as defined above) introduced by two presenters, at least one of whom will be an IPBES staff member. - IPBES podcast episodes produced, finalized, placed on a podcast hosting platform and podcast hosting directories (e.g. Apple Podcasts, Stitcher, Spotify) and support promotion on relevant social media channels by July 2023. (Promotion to be undertaken in liaison with IPBES) - IPBES narratives reaching new decision-makers through the medium of the season.

Duties and Responsibilities The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment. Established in April 2012, the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES) has a membership of over 130 Governments (see www.ipbes.net) and seeks to respond to the needs of governments and other stakeholders to strengthen the science-policy interface on biodiversity and ecosystem services.

Under the overall supervision of the IPBES Head of Communications, the Consultant will:

Conceptualize, produce and coordinate the marketing of an IPBES podcast season

  • Lead the production of a six-episode (25 minute each) IPBES podcast season, including, but not limited to, season conceptualization (building on the first two seasons) to ensure continuation of a cohesive and impactful brand identity, matching the target audience of expanded decision-makers.
  • Develop a comprehensive pre-production, production and post-production plan – which will include designing the programme format, arranging logistics and delivering the final product according to an agreed timetable.
  • Develop and produce all podcast episodes including content, scripts and structure.
  • Advance a compelling narrative in each episode which will consist of a main recorded interview that will highlight a unique and unexpected voice from within the wider IPBES community - defined for this consultancy as individuals already engaged in some way with the IPBES work programme, whose expertise, priorities and perspectives are directly linked to those of the IPBES work programme. It will include experts, such as conservationists, biologists and others whose lives/professions are tied to biodiversity.
  • Include interview(s) or discussions with members of the IPBES community in each episode. All interviews are expected to be of appropriate broadcast quality. There will be two presenters, one who is an IPBES staff member, to introduce and conclude each episode interview/discussion.
  • Organize the presenter/s’ logistics so that episode introductions and conclusions are recorded remotely at similarly high levels of quality.
  • Organize and manage the logistics with an established network of professional affiliates and appropriate online platforms/tools to record all interviews remotely.
  • Record and produce a mixed trail to be used to promote the season online and to assist in the placement of the programme on appropriate podcast directories.
  • The consultant will edit and mix the raw material to provide IPBES final products of broadcast quality.
  • Design and implement a post-production placement and subsequent marketing strategy to bring the IPBES podcast season to the wider priority market, including paid advertising – on an appropriate platform or platforms.
  • Produce audiograms (illustrated sound clips) which would be used in online promotion on social media platforms. Also, liaison and support with IPBES communications team on promotion of the season on the IPBES social media platforms.
  • Monitor, analyze and report on the reach and other key metrics of each episode and of the season as a whole – developing key recommendations regarding future seasons.

    Qualifications/special skills University degree (Master's degree or equivalent) in journalism, communication marketing or related field. A first level university degree in combination with qualifying experience will be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.

  • Extensive knowledge and experience of communications, broadcast media and marketing;

  • Minimum 5 years of experience in international media, journalism and communications;
  • Minimum 2 years proven experience in leading the production and marketing of broadcast quality podcasts is desirable;
  • Experience working with a network of professional global affiliates and appropriate online platforms and tools to recording all interviews remotely;
  • Proven track record marketing podcasts and developing paid advertising strategies;
  • Extensive experience with international organizations and international media;
  • Knowledge of IPBES, biodiversity and environment-related matters will be a strong recommendation.

    Languages Fluency in oral and written English is required. Fluency in another United Nations official language will be a recommendation.
