Social Cohesion Activities across the region, Security Reforms in the region and Peace Building Fund Project for Fiji

This assignment will support a few key initiatives in UNDP Pacific Office:

  1. Strengthening of the Social Cohesion and Reconciliation programming in the Pacific (Fiji, Va-nuatu, Solomon Islands)

  2. Research and advocacy for Security Sector Reform in the Pacific (all region)

  3. Coordination and partnerships for the Peace Building Project in Fiji

This assignment will be linked to the rapid support to national partners in the region, including government officials, MPs, independent bodies, women’s national and local community organisations, CSOs and human rights defenders, in order to implement social cohesion and reconciliation activities that aim to build trust amongst and across communities and social groups as well as between citizens and governments and its institutions. The initiative builds on previous projects working in the area of social cohesion by strengthening connections between the government and citizens and will support the provision of technical advice and analysis to key government and non-government partners, as well as a series of dialogues across the region, increase women and youths civic participation and to start working through some of the intractable social and human rights challenges that have faced the country for so many years. This initiative will also contribute to strengthening the capacity of key institutions to build and strengthen a human rights culture across the region.

Under the direct supervision of the Effective Governance Team Lead who is managing the entire team and portfolio of projects and programmes on effective governance, the UN Volunteer will undertake the following tasks:

  1. Contribute to and conduct an analysis and research and gather information from partners, under the supervision of the Team Leader, on peace, social cohesion, security, human rights, and human development in the region.

  2. Support the development of recommendations on integration of the relevant findings on peace, security, human rights and social cohesion into relevant national policies and for the use in the project implementations.

  3. Support the development of the papers, background documents, concept notes, briefings on thematic areas for the use in UNDP programming, communications, and partnership building.

  4. Conduct the necessary internal procedures related to editing, clearance of the relevant documents and papers.

  5. Contribute to the facilitation of partnerships at the national level and across the region

  6. Support the organization and coordinate roundtable discussions, briefing sessions, workshops, national and regional events.

Suva, Fiji is a family duty station. No immediate security threats are identified. Suva has large international community. There is an international school of Suva for the families with kids. There are also 3-4 kindergarteners that are specifically working with international community. English is a common language of communication in Fiji.
