This is a Consultancy contract. More about Consultancy contracts.

UNICEF works in some of the world’s toughest places, to reach the world’s most disadvantaged children. To save their lives. To defend their rights. To help them fulfill their potential.

Across 190 countries and territories, we work for every child, everywhere, every day, to build a better world for everyone.

And we never give up.

For every child, commitment

The consultant will support Young UNICEF’s global coordination to ensure sustainable engagement with and mobilization of peers, UNICEF staff and management toward the ultimate goal of empowering the organisation to better deliver for children. The consultant will also support the implementation of key activities for capacity and community building, as well as internal communications, to contribute and invest in the future of UNICEF’s workplace as an inclusive and diverse environment for the development of young personnel.

How can you make a difference?

Launched in October 2019, Young UNICEF (YoU) is an employee-initiated, affinity network of young professionals who are 35 or younger and working for UNICEF. Together, YoU members co-create a safe yet open space that drives culture change while supporting each other's participation, professional development and empowerment. The YoU community also stimulates cross-pollination of ideas and actions, always seeking innovative solutions for UNICEF programming and new ways of working.

Young UNICEF’s objectives are to:

  • Spearhead organizational culture change as the organization’s current and future workforce.
  • Connect young professionals across the organization to share skills, knowledge and experiences.
  • Promote participation amongst young professionals by co-creating a platform to influence decision-making processes.

Young UNICEF is led by YoU Global Conveners and UNICEF’s Young Management Team (YMT), a group of volunteer staff who coordinate activities and decision-making of the community’s priorities.

Under supervision of the Global Conveners and in collaboration with the YMT, the consultant is expected to carry out the following tasks:

  1. Support Young UNICEF global coordination with members, YMT and other Employee Resource Groups (ERGs) and the Global Staff Association (GSA):
  • Participate in weekly and ad hoc coordination meetings with the YMT.
  • Build relationships and regularly liaise with ERGs and GSA to ensure synergies with organizational priorities and to report on major events and initiatives.
  • Represent YoU leadership in meetings with ERGs and other groups, when necessary.
  • Identify and support opportunities to co-facilitate events or workshops with ERGs and other groups.
  • Identify and support opportunities to streamline YoU goals and objectives into key documents, information, education and communication (IEC) content, and other guidance produced by other ERG groups and vice versa.
  • With the YMT and the Division of Human Resources, explore the development and/or expansion of job shadowing and other professional growth initiatives for young staff in the organization.

Timeline: November 2021 – April 2022

Deliverables:

  1. Upon contract signature, the consultant will provide a work plan and respective timeline for the tasks outlined in this ToR, which will have to be validated by the Global Conveners and YMT.
  2. 6 monthly progress presentations (in PPT format), shared at the end of each month during a coordination meeting, detailing the status of ERG/GSA engagement, discussions and agreed shared activity plans.
  3. Short paper outlining feasibility, timeline and next steps to implement professional growth initiatives, including job shadowing

2. Consolidate and design the Voices of YoU Report:

  1. The objective of the report is to take stock of UNICEF young employees’ wellbeing and satisfaction by consolidating key findings from the consultations and surveys conducted by Young UNICEF thus far and provide recommendations on investing in the future workforce. This work will also include redefining Young UNICEF’s value proposition to the organization.
  • In coordination with the YMT, organize and analyze findings from data gathered and available by YoU consultations and surveys on young employees’ wellbeing and satisfaction.
  • Consolidate key findings to document and assess the impact, depth and breadth of YoU-led initiatives on the organization’s workplace culture (including but not limited to destigmatizing mental health, fighting racism and discrimination, intergenerational dialogue, youth leadership).
  • Document good leadership practices in UNICEF, which entails organizing and facilitating exchanges with UNICEF senior management, young staff in leadership positions and/or with leadership skills, map external leadership practices promoted in other key UN or development organizations.
  • Document relevant success stories and provide recommendations on the importance of collaboration with young people and investing in the future workforce. This work will also include redefining Young UNICEF’s value proposition to the organization, developing a white paper on YoU vision and will be used as an advocacy tool for culture change.

    Timeline: January 2021 – April 2022

    Deliverables:

  1. Voices of YoU report, synthesizing findings on young employees’ wellbeing and satisfaction, impact of YoU’s initiatives on workplace culture, good leadership practices and outlining recommendations for better participation of young staff in UNICEF’s decision-making. The report will also include, as an annex, a white paper on Young UNICEF’s vision (value proposition to the organization). The report will be delivered designed and ready-to-use for advocacy purposes.

3. Greening UNICEF @UNICEF 75:

  1. In line with UNICEF 75 activities to commemorate UNICEF’s 75 years, YoU members are invited to join a taskforce to identify an 'Agenda for Action' and promote the need for eco-friendly operations of our business.
