Job Description

The Nutrition officer will be working under the direct supervision of the Senior health and nutrition officer and will be responsible providing quality of maternal, Infant, and Young Child Nutrition (MIYCN) to caretakers as per IRC protocols and international benchmarks.

Major duties and responsibilities:

- Ensure that Nutrition activities in the Galkayo, Goldogob & Adaado districts are implemented and running smoothly, including maternal, Infant, and Young Child Nutrition (MIYCN) activities, active case finding, screening, and referral of malnourished children. - In collaboration with senior health and nutrition officer develop monthly, quarterly, and annual plan of action for all nutrition activities at the project target locations. - Participate in the implementation of the nutrition surveillance activities – surveys and other nutrition passements. - Work with the team to prepare and collect case studies/success stories for demonstrating impact, including lessons learned and best practices. - Lead nutrition activities at the project target locations including health/nutrition education sessions conducted by the CHWs/IYCF councilors in the target locations. - Represent IRC in Coordination and collaboration meetings including Cluster and Ad-hoc Meetings. - With the support of CHWs organize case finding to identify malnourished children at both facility and community level - Ensuring Counseling of mothers on the appropriate time to introduce complementary feeding promotion the continuation of Breast feeding. - Leading the education sessions for the mothers on the quality, quantity and frequency of complementary feeds to promote adequate weight gain. - Utilize the provided education material on breastfeeding and complementary feeding practices, relaying accurate, practical and specific advice for the mother’s needs. - Ensure a comfortable, calm environment for counselling sessions and maintain good relationships with the beneficiaries. - Provide training and health education and information and materials on prevention and treatment of malnutrition, BF and hygiene and sanitation to the caretakers - Assist/Support the site CHWs/IYCF in compilation of monthly data reports and preparation of monthly health and nutrition supplies inventories and requests. - Support the MIYCN activities including training and supportive supervisory activities to ensure the IYCF & Mother to mother support groups are operational and offering an integrated package of nutrition services. - Provide regular and consistent technical assistance during implementation health workers and CHWs at the target project sites and coordinate nutrition activities in the field. - Provide regular feedback on nutrition activities of the program. - Assist in preparation of donor reports. - Participate in the development and implementation of program work plan. - Any other duty assigned by the immediate supervisor.

Supplies management

- In collaboration with the senior health & Nutrition officer: - Ensure adequate supply of essential drugs, diagnostics and other consumables to the supported health facilities. - Provide periodic inventories as well as assess the needs and report timely. - Support in management of facility store (sand ensure identification of gaps in health and nutrition sectors and provide regular on job training.

Human Resource

- Directly supervise the nutrition staff working under the BRCiS III. - Direct monitoring and supervision the nutrition work activities of the MIYCN/Mother to mother support groups to ensure that work is done properly and efficiently.

Monitoring, management and capacity building.

- Provide regular supervision and technical support to health facility staff including participation in monitoring and impact analysis of the project. - Supervise the efficient implementation of all feeding program; supplementary and therapeutic feeding programme interventions - Monitor and review nutrition supplies and equipment’s’ movements such as deliveries, storage, transport and utilization at the site level. - Monitor the situation and provide feedback to the senior health & Nutrition officer. - Work closely with the teams to ensure all children are measured correctly. - Ensure all criteria are respected and understood by the teams including admission, discharge, and transfer to and from the various components of the program. - Monitor and verify the sources of the nutrition data from the facilities/mobile outreaches ensuring the monthly and weekly data are reviewed before they are submitted.

Qualifications

- University degree in nutrition, public health, or related technical field. - At least Three years of similar experience in Nutrition and public health fields. - Knowledge of the local working language of the duty station is required. Fluency in English required both oral and written - Good knowledge of computer management and applications. - Knowledge on MIYCN, IYCF, MTMSG and other nutrition programs will be an added advantage. - Proven analytical, communication/ negotiation skills and ability to think strategically.
