The fundamental mission of UNICEF is to promote the rights of every child, everywhere, in everything the organization does — in programmes, in advocacy and in operations. The vision guiding the UNICEF Cambodia Country Programme 2019-2023 is to contribute to national efforts so that all girls and boys, especially the most disadvantaged, progressively fulfil their basic rights to survival, care, protection and participation to reach their full potential. This will be achieved through five interdependent programme components: (a) health and nutrition; (b) WASH; (c) education; (d) child protection; and (e) policy and public financing for children.

The Health and Nutrition section at UNICEF Cambodia is providing a long-term support to Ministry of Health/National Nutrition Program (NNP) to improve and optimize these nutrition services for pregnant women and children in Cambodia. This unit is placed under direct supervision of the UNICEF Deputy Representative Programme and work closely with other Sections and two Zone Offices.

Key roles and responsibilities:

The interns will work under the direct supervision of National Nutrition Officer and nutrition consultants to undertake the following tasks:

  • Engage in national and sub-national consultative meetings for finalization of the second edition of the “Fast Track Road Map for Improving Nutrition”
  • Engage in consultative meeting with Ministry of Health and National Nutrition Programme and help with translations,
  • Support finalization and translation in Khmer of the interview tools the health service providers and caregivers,
  • Conduct interviews in Khmer with health service providers and caregivers in Ratanak Kiri, Mondul Kiri and Kratie, under the supervision of the national consultant,
  • Support the data analysis of the interviews, including transcribing and translations of interviews from Khmer to English,
  • Support the reporting of the key findings of the reasons for high drop-off rates from SAM treatment from health service providers and caregivers,
  • Support GMP and SAM treatment data management using excel templates, and
  • Perform other tasks assigned by the supervisor.

To qualify as an advocate for every child you will have…

  • Student who graduated from Bachelor’s Degree or in final year of Bachelor Degree or is currently pursuing master’s degree in public/global health, health sciences, social science, and any other relevant field,
  • Strong interest in maternal and child nutrition,
  • Use of computer software(Microsoft office Package) for data analysis and presentation,
  • Good proficiency in English and Excellence in Khmer language, and
  • Possess good communication skills and solid analytical skills- strong commitment and passion for UNICEF’s mission.

The intern should be:

  • Familiar with and understand issues on child nutrition
  • Familiar with multi-culture environment would be an asset

Availability:

  • Desired role period 5 months, Mon - Fri (full time – 5 days per week)

Conditions of the Internship:

Interns with UNICEF may be remunerated with a living allowance, depending on the specific conditions. Preferably the costs associated must be borne by the nominating institution, related institution or government, which may provide the required financial assistance to its students; or by the student, who will have to obtain financing for subsistence and make his or her own arrangements to take on this assignment.

UNICEF will cover the cost for field trips when they travel out of their duty station in the course of the assignment and will also provide a laptop and access to telephone, printer, and other necessary equipment required for the assignment. They will work from home 3 days a week and from office 2 days a week (for the weeks not travelling to field). The seating arrangement

will be alternate with other Consultants. UNICEF will provide laptop for the duration of the assignment only. The interns will return their laptops to UNICEF at the end of their contract period.

Other information

Cambodia remains one of the top countries with the highest fully vaccinated rates among targeted populations. As of December 31, 2021, 98.1% of the adult population 18 years old and above has been fully vaccinated, with vaccination rates of children at 75.7% for 5 year olds, 100% for 6-11 year olds, and 94.8% for 12-17 year olds. Currently, the country is opening its socio and economic sectors and placing minimal restrictions.
