Background and Justification

Digital engagement continues to play an important role in UNICEF's response to global shifts in the fields of communication, fundraising, advocacy and partnership. Use of digital media platforms helps position UNICEF in Eswatini as a knowledge leader, expands outreach and broadens engagement around children's rights. Effective use of digital channels for communication of UNICEF's key messages, through relevant content, experience and dialogue, allow individuals to connect directly with other individuals or groups, as well as brands and organizations, thus creating valuable relationships with both online and offline supporters.

The Programme Effectiveness section, working closely with other programme teams, is responsible for UNICEF’s external relations and advocacy functions, and leads and manages external communications, through digital communications, media, marketing and branding. The team is responsible for developing and maintaining UNICEF’s digital properties including website, blogs and social media.

To use digital communication platforms more effectively to increase digital brand engagement, UNICEF Eswatini is currently looking for a Communication Consultant (Media Design & Communications) to support the programme team in updating web and social media communication for programmes, events for promotional purposes and campaigns.

The communication consultant will particularly focus on enhancing UNICEF Eswatini external communication using digital platfoms managed by UNICEF including UNICEF Eswatini website, facebook, twitter, instagram and any other digital platforms that UNICEF recommends. The consultant will support sections to upload the new Country Programme content on the website and continously develop digital content for all platforms.

Scope of Work

1) Goal and Objective:

The overall aim of this consultancy is to produce communication products and materials in a timely manner to support Country Office communication activities and regional and global campaigns including assisting with content and story generation for digital platforms working closely with the Communication Specialist.

More specifically the consultant will be responsible for the following:

Communications and external relations support:

• Produce advocacy and communication materials such as images, videos, web pages that meet the country and global standards • Assist in drafting articles, human interest stories, social media stories and other advocacy materials for both web-based and traditional media as appropriate • Increase UNICEF Eswatini’ s social media reach by expanding presence at all relevant social media platforms (twitter, facebook, instagram) • Prepare social media plan for all programmes including flagship events, initiatives and campaigns; • Support UNICEF branding, including graphic design of print materials

Website update and content management

• Manage Country Office website and social media accounts daily and ensure dissemination of key stories; • Generate interest pieces for social media in collaboration with all sections

Support with basic visibility design and implementation

• Adapt multimedia assets for the local Eswatini audiences; • Create and maintain photo, video, design samples library in good order • Participate in different communications and advocacy events, field trips and campaigns to generate (live) social media content

2) Work relationships:

The Consultant will work under the supervision of the Communication Specialist (UNICEF) with technical guidance from the Deputy Representative and Chiefs of Programmes.

Payment Schedule

Payments will be done monthly based on agreed deliverables for each month.

Desired competencies, technical background and experience

• Higher Secondary education • At least one year experience maintaining social media accounts and new media • Have knowledge and understanding of the local and global digital landscape and trends • Have some experience in Graphic design and web-design • Have strong organizational skills and ability to multi-task

• Demonstrate flexibility – ability to work effectively on multiple assignments simultaneously and adapts to changing demands and circumstances and be able to work both independently and as part of a team • Demonstrated ability to working a multicultural environment and establish harmonious and effective relationships with partners • Experience working with the UNICEF and or the UN and understanding of UNICEF programmes an added advantage • Excellent English oral and written communication skills.

Administrative issues

Consultant is expected to be able to do Tele-working, work from UNICEF office (when necessary) and attend UNICEF events as required.

UNICEF will provide computer with internet access since the consultant will need reliable connection to be able to undertake the tasks. Since the tasks involve updating of UNICEF website, the consultant will exceptionally be provided with a computer that has the Drupal System for updating the site.

Consultants and individual contractors are responsible for determining their tax liabilities and for the payment of any taxes and/or duties, in accordance with local or other applicable laws.
