The UNDP Strategic Plan 2022-2025 embraces the complexity of development and commits the organization to support countries to find faster, more durable solutions to achieve the 2030 Agenda of Sustainable Development. Important development trends like urbanization, climate change, and rising inequalities among others pose significant challenges to achieving the 2030 Agenda of Sustainable Development and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The development context is changing and what used to work is no longer sufficient to address the growing challenges. To effectively address these challenges does not only require new solutions, it requires radical new ways of identifying solutions and speeding up how quickly we learn about complex challenges.

UNDP Eswatini has embarked on a new programming cycle, effective January 2021 under its Country Programme – 2021 to 2025. As part of its inception, a robust communication service is required to enable the Country Office to communicate its new priorities and its contribution to the United Nations Sustainable Development Cooperation Framework. At the same time, the Country Office within the new cycle is required to design the needed communication plans and ensure the full orientation is delivered to the staff to enable them to contribute to communication results. This UNV assignment is part of UNDP’s efforts to strengthen the capacity of its communication department to enhance the communication and visibility efforts of the Country Office. The key results will have an impact on the Country Office in sustained support to Eswatini, positioning UNDP Eswatini to be a partner of choice with enhanced visibility among stakeholders.

Within the delegated authority and under the supervision of the Communication Specialist or his/her designated mandated representative(s), the UNV Communication Associate will: • Support the development and implementation of UNDP Eswatini Communications strategy, Annual Communications Plan, and Key Performance Indicators • Support content development for stories, op-eds, talking points, press releases, and/or social media posts • Assist team members in synthesizing information from the UNDP Country Programme and the National Development Plan of the Kingdom of Eswatini • Carry out mapping of potential partnerships following UNDP’s Communication Strategy 2020-2022, Partnerships private sector, media and celebrity engagement strategy. Support with contacts and engagement propositions. • Support in preparing presentations, decks, pitches, toolkits and process documents. • Assist in maintaining dashboards, and meeting calendars for the Communications Unit • Support the team with curation and coordination of events, campaigns, workshops • Highlighting the work of UNDP and building relationships within the ecosystem • Build communication materials for events and design flyers, brochures and short videos and help spread awareness through relevant channels. • Monitor social media and inform expansion of UNDP’s visibility on that platform

Eswatini is a landlocked kingdom in Southern Africa covering a total area of 17,364 km². Eswatini has magnificent mountain scenery with unique, ancient rock formations, which are a source of fascination for geologists, scholars and visitors. The Kingdom has four topographical and climatic areas ranging from 400 to 1800 metres above sea level, each with its unique characteristics. The country’s ecosystems are home to the biodiversity of global significance. The country has one of the largest intact altitudinal gradients of the natural ecosystem in Southern Africa and its ecosystems provide natural resources, ecological infrastructure and essential ecosystem services if not a lifeline for food and water security, poverty alleviation, and livelihood generation.
