Background

As a global champion on gender equality and the empowerment of women UN Women is implementing a United Nations Country Team Joint Project on Sustaining Business and Protecting Jobs in the Informal Economy with UN agencies, namely, United Nations Development Programme, International Labor Organization, and United Nations Industrial Development Organization under the coordination role of the Resident Coordinator Office. The Joint Project is funded by UN COVID 19 Response and Recovery Fund, MPTF. The Project has the objective to implement evidence-based and gender responsive interventions and emergency response to lessen the adverse impact of COVID-19 on the private sector to protect jobs and ensure protection of social services. The project focuses on reducing vulnerability and building improved resilience of the urban informal sector workers and enterprises, especially women, female youth, and persons with disabilities. It runs between June 30, 2021, to March 30, 2022. As participating agency, UN Women is responsible for ensuring the mainstreaming of gender in project implementation. For which purpose, it has started various initiatives including the establishment of a Gender Review Team and the conduct of an assessment on the Situation of Women in SMES. Based on the findings of the Assessment, UN Women is implementing capacity building initiatives for women in SMEs on gender and entrepreneurial skill. UN Women intends to broaden the reach of the training more women in SMEs and plans to conduct three rounds of training.

The main objective of the trainings will be to enhance the capacity of women in the informal sector and SMEs to say no to violence and discrimination, be competitive in the labor market and to equally participate and benefit from different economic initiatives. The trainings will also have the following specific objectives: ---Enhance the understanding of women in SMEs and informal sector on gender and gender concepts; enhance women’s skills on entrepreneurial skill, business idea generation and start-ups and the seals of art to respond to the COVID 19 challenge; and create a platform to foster new partnership and strengthen existing networks amongst women in SMEs.

Accordingly, UN Women is seeking to obtain the services of a qualified national consultants with good track record in undertaking similar assignments. The consultants should be able to design and implement a 5-day training on “Gender, Gender Concepts and Entrepreneurial Skills with particular focus on business plan development for Women in SMEs”.

Duties and Responsibilities

The national consultants will be mainly responsible to conduct the training simultaneously. Each trainer will be responsible to develop the schedule and the facilitation of the training. The consultants, under this assignment, will undertake the following tasks:

Design a five-days training programme with training material covering at the minimum the following key issues:

  • Basics gender concepts, gender equality, gender analysis, gender mainstreaming and leadership and decision making.
  • Gender and women’s empowerment.
  • Entrepreneurship, business plan development, conceptual framework, model, gender gaps and women in entrepreneurship.
  • Becoming an entrepreneurship: pre-startup, startup, and implementation.
  • Gender and entrepreneurship: strengthening women entrepreneurs and be competitive in SMEs.
  • Facilitate major points of discussion e.g., using Power Point that could be easily referred to in the organization of the training.
  • Facilitating the theoretical and methodological part of the training by focusing on issues related to gender and entrepreneurship.
  • Create list of necessary readings on the topic and where possible provide soft copy for distribution to trainees.
  • Facilitating a practice-oriented training, where participants are encouraged to draft business plans, practice selection of relevant topics.
  • Conduct pre and post training assessment to evaluate the outcome of the training. and
  • Prepare a training report summarizing feedback on each of the trainees and recommendations for similar engagements in the future.

Required Skills and Experience

Education

  • Master’s degree or equivalent in gender/women's studies, business and social studies or related field is required.
  • A Bachelor’s degree may be considered with additional four years’ experience.

Experience and skills

  • At least 5 years of demonstrable experience in development work at the national, regional and/or international level around gender and business.
  • Technical expertise and strong understanding of gender and its concept, women empowerment, and entrepreneurship etc.…
  • Demonstrated ability and experience to facilitate trainings for adults.
  • Experience in developing lessons plan with relevant learning topics and exercises.
  • The ability to engage and motivate interactive dialogue and peer learnings amongst trainees.
  • Experience in working in a diversity team is an asset.
  • The ability to understand and present complex issues clearly and concisely.

Languages:

  • Fluency in English and Amharic is required.
