UNICEF works in 190 countries and territories to protect the rights of every child. UNICEF has spent 70 years working to improve the lives of children and their families. Defending children's rights throughout their lives requires a global presence, aiming to produce results and understand their effects. UNICEF believes all children have a right to survive, thrive and fulfill their potential – to the benefit of a better world.

For every child, Protection.

With over 850 indigenous languages, and one f the most ethnically diverse populations, widespread poverty and gender inequality make it hard for many children to realize their rights. In Papua New Guinea (PNG), UNICEF’s works effectively both ‘upstream’ (with governments) and ‘downstream’ (at the grassroots level) to carry out its mission through a programme of cooperation jointly developed with the government guides our work in the country.

How can you make a difference?

Violence against children, domestic violence and intimate partner violence (IPV) are a key shows that 27% of parents/caregivers used physical punishment; over 50% of parents and caregivers reported calling their child lazy, stupid or something similar, with nearly two thirds reporting shouting, yelling or screaming at their child. Violence has long term consequences and it contributes to the replication of conduct problems in children, leading to antisocial behaviour including violence, drug use and gang crime, it also leads to social exclusion, stigma and prevents women and children from achieving their full potential in life. COVID19 lockdown and the State of Emergency only contributed to the worsening of the situation increasing the cases of domestic violence and violence against children.

UNICEF PNG, through its country programme cooperation agreement with the Government of PNG 2018-2022, is aiming to tackle these issues and to address the social and cultural norms perpetuating violence and gender inequalities through several prevention strategies. More specifically, the prevention pillar of the Child Protection programme emphasizes the use of social media as a tool to engage people, primarily youth and adolescents, on issues affecting them, including violence in homes and communities, gender inequalities, access to services and opportunities, and others. Among other participation and social mobilization tools, UNICEF applies the U-Report. This is a global tool developed by UNICEF and being used also in PNG. It is based on innovative, user-cantered opinion monitoring tool which enables real-time and anonymous data collection through free SMS, facebook messenger, Twitter and Whatsapp. This data is used for adjusting policies and programmes of the government, civic society, international organization and youth groups.

In order to encourage participation of young people and parents, raise awareness on VACW prevention and contribute to the positive behavior change related to VACW, especially at the times of COVID lockdown and emergency, UNICEF needs support in facilitating, coordinating and implementing U-Report development for youth and parents. This includes a wide range of online and face-to-face activities, such as promotion at youth events, cooperation with media and universities, online promotion campaign, etc.
