Organization Background

The International Rescue Committee (IRC) responds to the world’s worst humanitarian crises and helps people to survive and rebuild their lives. Founded in 1933, the IRC offers lifesaving care and life-changing assistance to refugees forced to flee from war or disaster.

The International Rescue Committee, hereinafter referred to as “the IRC”, is a non-profit, humanitarian agency that provides relief, rehabilitation, protection, resettlement services, and advocacy for refugees, displaced persons and victims of oppression and violent conflict. The IRC has been working in Uganda since 1998 in response to mass displacement and devastation wrought by the rebel group, the Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA). Since then, in partnership with various donors, the IRC in Uganda has expanded to meet the needs of the conflict-affected regions of Karamoja, Acholi, West Nile region, and in Southwestern Uganda as well as amongst urban refugees in Kampala.

About Signpost

Signpost is an innovative digital initiative providing the humanitarian community with a platform to reach refugees, asylum seekers and crisis-affected communities around the world with accessible information. Signpost programming will take a holistic approach to address information needs in Kyaka II Refugee settlement in Kyegegwa District and in Kampala. Signpost is a useful information resource for people in need fosters more in-depth community, more trust, and, most importantly, more utility for its users.

Signpost will enable refugees and asylum-seekers and vulnerable host community members to put across their questions and concerns and to receive the information they need to make informed choices about their lives in multiple languages.

Job Overview

IRC is seeking Moderators, based in Kampala under the direct supervision of the Editorial Officer. Moderators will communicate directly with our users every day -- replying to their comments, messages, and questions; and support the development of responsive information materials.

Duties and Responsibilities

●Reply to messages and comments received on Signpost social media channels with the help of a team of experts and moderation guidelines.

●Engage users in conversation online.

●Follow protocol to escalate any communication from vulnerable cases to Protection Specialists.

●Provide feedback on (and translate into English if required) representative and noteworthy comments and write an analysis of the day’s communications (including responses to posts, trends in conversation and information gaps).

●Share opinions, feedback, cultural awareness, contextual knowledge, and learning with the wider team on an ongoing basis.

●Collaborate with Editorial and Social Media teams to develop thorough, well-researched answers.

●Analyze information gaps amongst refugee populations to feed into future content creation.

●Keep up to date with all the new information that we put out on an ongoing basis and attend regular trainings as required.

Key Working Relationships:

Position Reports to: Editorial Officer

Other Internal and/or external contacts: Signpost team (Manager, Service mapping officer), IRC protection team, IT/Helpdesk team, implementing partners.

Qualifications

●Diploma or degree in social work or a related field, Bachelor’s Degree is an added advantage.

●At least three to five years of demonstrated experience in editing, sub-editing, copy editing.

●Experience working with a humanitarian organization.

●Asylum-seeker, refugee or host community member

●High emotional intelligence and demonstrated ability to empathize.

●A native speaker of one of our audiences’ key languages.

●Excellent communication skills ability to apply communication guidelines in written responses.

●Integrity.

●Ability to work autonomously.

●Respect for people of all walks of life.

●A team player.

●Fantastic attention to detail.

●Strong computer proficiency and well acquainted with basic software tools - can navigate autonomously in Windows, Android, Skype, Microsoft Suite and Google docs.

●Knowledge of social media platforms, especially Facebook, and cultural use of these platforms.

●The commitment to going above and beyond in the quest to give people in crisis accurate information.

•Advanced English language skills, oral and written.
