This is a UNV International Specialist contract. This kind of contract is known as International UN Volunteer. It is normally internationally recruited only. More about UNV International Specialist contracts.

Eligibility criteria

Minimum age: 25 years old. Nationals of the country of assignment are not eligible, except the assignments in Headquarters duty stations.

Description of task

Within the terms of organization’s delegated authority, and under the direct supervision of ICT Operations Officer for Kinshasa, the UN Volunteer will undertake the following tasks:

  • Coordinates with supervisor regarding installation of microwave equipment and implementation of projects.
  • Implements regular and preventive maintenance for all microwave equipment and accessories in the mission area.
  • Plans and designs the initial microwave network proposal, taking into account path profile assessments, frequency surveys, Fresnel zones and transmission limitations, for final approval by the supervisor.
  • Assists in microwave pre-deployment surveys/feasibility studies and site preparation including installation of shelters, towers/antennas and associate power supply related accessories.
  • Aligns and optimizes microwave dishes in order to maximize overall performance.
  • Interfaces multiplexing equipment and configures connectivity to PABX, routers, switches and bridges.
  • Monitors the health of the Microwave network using SNMP protocol-based software.
  • When working with (including supervising) national staff or (non-)governmental counterparts set aside dedicated time for capacity development through coaching, mentoring and formal and on-the-job training.
  • Any other related duties as may be required.

Qualifications/Requirements

Required degree level:

Bachelor degree or equivalent

Education - Additional Comments:

Telecommunications, or equivalent diploma/certificate from Polytechnic or college

Required experience:

36 Months

Experience remark:

At least 3 years’ experience in working with microwave systems.

Be conversant with safety guidelines on working at height and be able to carry out tasks at heights of up to 100m.

Technological background and experience in radio systems installation and maintenance specializing in microwave fields in particular.

Language skills:

  • English(Mandatory), Level - Fluent
  • French(Optional), Level - Working Knowledge

Area of expertise:

IT architecture and IT project management, Telecommunications systems

Area of expertise details:

- Good knowledge of Windows Microsoft Office programs such as Access, Word, Excel and other Microsoft professional programs.

  1. College Diploma or equivalent post-secondary education certificate.
  2. Fully proficient and familiar with Windows programs, especially Access, Word, Excel and other
  3. Must have at least 5 years working experience with computers.
  4. Prior Military or Police Communications Center experience would be an asset.
  5. Previous working knowledge with radio communications equipment desirable or.
  6. Valid driving license.
  7. Must be fluent in written and spoken English. Knowledge of French is an advantage.
  8. Computer literacy, ability to manage and adopt new procedures.
