Overview

Perform repair and maintenance of various systems of the UN building.

You have:

  • Secondary education is required.
  • University Degree in Engineering, Facilities Management, Construction Management or equivalent field will be given due consideration, but it is not a requirement.
  • Vocational education in the field of technical disciplines (electricity, plumbing, general maintenance, etc.) would be an asset.
  • Minimum of 4 years (with high school diploma) or 1 year (with bachelor’s degree) of progressively responsible general maintenance experience is required.
  • Experience must include plumbing, electrical repair, general structural repair, familiarity with various building systems, including HVAC, plumbing, electrical, and structural components, to ensure comprehensive maintenance and repair.
  • Experience in the use of computers, office software packages (MS Word, Excel, etc.) and web-based management systems, and advanced knowledge of spreadsheet and database packages.
  • Fluency in Russian and Turkmen is required.
  • Some knowledge of English is an asset.

Contract

This is a NPSA-4 contract. This kind of contract is known as National Personnel Services Agreement. It is normally only for nationals. It usually requires 4 years of experience, depending on education. More about NPSA-4 contracts.

Background

A joint initiative has been established by the organizations of the United Nations system to achieve economies of scale by improving cost-effectiveness in the provision of services for the mutual benefit of the UN Offices, Programmes and Funds, and Specialized Agencies. The Common Building Services in respect of the Common Premises include maintenance and repair, security, cleaning, and landscaping and etc.

Under the direct supervision of the UN Building Facilities Officer, the incumbent will be responsible for repair and maintenance of various systems of the UN building. This position requires a blend of skills in plumbing, electrical work, and general structural maintenance to ensure the safety, functionality, and aesthetic of the facilities.

The Maintenance Technician will work in close collaboration with other technical personnel at the UN Building and will promote a client-oriented, high-quality result-oriented culture, provide advice on complex technical matters and contribute to the knowledge sharing.

Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Implement preventive maintenance by performing the following functions.
  • Conduct routine inspections by regularly assessing plumbing, electrical, and structural systems.
  • Carry out scheduled maintenance on equipment to prevent breakdowns.
  • Prepare the maintenance plan to monitor the systems and perform scheduled servicing to proactively identify issues.

    2. Implement corrective maintenance by performing the following functions:

  • Plumbing

  1. Install, repair, and maintain plumbing systems, including pipes, valves, faucets, and fixtures.
  2. Diagnose and troubleshoot plumbing issues, such as leaks, blockages, or faulty installations.
  • Electrical
  1. Conduct maintenance and repair of electrical systems, including lighting, outlets, breakers, and wiring.
  2. Troubleshoot and resolve electrical issues, such as power outages, short circuits, and malfunctioning equipment.
  3. Replace or upgrade electrical fixtures and circuits as necessary.
  • General Structural Maintenance
  1. Conduct routine inspections and maintenance of building structures, including walls, floors, roofs, and windows.
  2. Repair and maintain structural components, including drywall, roofing, and flooring systems.
  3. Assist with minor renovations and remodeling projects as directed.

    3. Perform inventory and resource management:

  • Maintain an inventory of spare parts as well as maintenance and cleaning supplies.
  • Order parts and tools as necessary.

    4. Maintain documentation and reporting:

  • Keep accurate logs of all maintenance activities.

  • Prepare quarterly reports on maintenance outcomes.

The incumbent performs other duties within their functional profile as deemed necessary for the efficient functioning of the Office and the Organization.

Required Skills and Experience

Education:

  • Experience in the usage of Enterprise Resource Planning based e-platforms.
  • Experience with reading and interpreting the schemes of plumbing systems/ electrical wiring.
  • Experience working with various electrical systems
  • Experience operating maintenance tools and machinery
  • Experience working as part of a maintenance or facilities team
  • Previous experience in cooperation with government and municipal authorities would be an asset.

Languages:

  • Fluency in Russian and Turkmen is required.
  • Some knowledge of English is an asset.
