The September 2018 Revitalized Agreement on Resolution of Conflict in the Republic South Sudan (R-ARCSS) provides for the formation of Revitalized Transitional Government of National Unity (R-TGONU) as a basis for governing the country during the transitional period 2020-2022 followed by elections in 2023. Though there has been significant reduction in level of conflict and violence across the country, South Sudan is still in Security Phase III level, with UN imposed curfew from 7:00pm to 5:00am. Banking facilities are available however, use of credit and debit cards is limited.

There are three mobile telephone companies namely, Zain, Dengitel and MTN providing services and sim cards are obtained with cash after registration by the service provider. JEDCO Electricity is currently lighting Juba however, the city is still mostly powered by individual generators and Solar systems

Running water is dependent on water tankers that deliver water to households and access to better health facilities is still a challenge. UN volunteers can access medical services in the UN Agency clinic while other medical services can be obtained at the UNMISS Level 2 hospital.

South Sudan is a unique country with a unique humanitarian, development, and peacebuilding context. It provides for an interesting and enriching environment, but also requires a mature level of cultural awareness, as well as more stamina and commitment than elsewhere to make life comfortable and affordable. Therefore, flexibility and the ability and willingness to live and work in harsh and potentially hazardous conditions, involving potential physical hardship, are essential. As this is a national UN Volunteer assignment, the UN Volunteer will be responsible for arranging his/her own housing and other living essentials. National UN Volunteers are part of the malicious insurance plan.

The contract lasts for the period indicated above with possibility of extensions subject to availability of funding, operational necessity and satisfactory performance. However, there is no expectation of renewal of the assignment.

Travel to duty station (if applicable) and a Settling-In-Grant will be provided in the event the duty station is not within commuting distance from the place of recruitment.

The applicable Volunteer Living Allowance is provided monthly to cover housing, utilities and normal cost of living expenses. Life, health and permanent disability insurance are included (health insurance for up to 3 dependents), as well as final repatriation (if applicable) and resettlement allowance for satisfactory service. Furthermore, in non-family duty stations that belong to hardship categories D or E, as classified by the ICSC, a Well-Being Differential (WBD) will be provided monthly. https://www.unv.org/
