U​​​NI​CEF's​ Global Staff Asso​cia​tion (GSA) is committed to representing UNICEF staff in all aspects of their development, management, and fulfilment of UNICEF’s work, as an active and equal partner, while promo​ting active participation, involvement and empowerment ​o​​f staff in a fair, equitable and ​​just manner, and upholding the dignity of staff members, in furthering UNICEF’s mission of improving lives of children and women world-wide. ​​​​​

The GSA is a convener and plays a key role in the ongoing discussions on staff welfare. GSA is seeking to engage a Consultant to conduct a study that focuses on experiences, career stories and career progression of UNICEF staff within the organization. This research study attempts to look at career progression of all staff in UNICEF, with underrepresented groups benchmarked against all staff across a continuum.

The duration of the consultancy is 6 months and could be done remotely with some travel.

How can you make a difference?

This consultancy is aimed at enabling staff to tell their life stories and lived experiences at UNICEF, linking it to their careers journey. Some of the expected information outcomes include the following:

  • Sharing of good practices, work experiences and work environments within UNICEF.
  • Review of attrition data in UNICEF and analyzing trends on staff separations and reasons.
  • Analysis of entry points of staff at the professional level and the barriers minority staff face to be recruited also tracking distinct patterns and trends on career advancements.
  • A review of the revolving door policy and how marginalized and excluded staff can be maintained through career conversations, mentorship, and coaching.
  • Study of national staff who have transitioned to international positions and lessons learnt.

Expected outcomes:

  • Audio visual and literary account of the life of some UNICEF staff members.
  • Conversation starting documentation of issues, good practices etc. from the compiled report.
  • Provide insight on any discriminatory practices in career progression of staff.
  • Additional data based on variability on staff welfare issues.

To qualify as an advocate for every child you will have…

  • An Advanced University Degree in human resource management, business management, international relations, psychology or another related field is required.
  • A minimum of 8 years of relevant HR experience, including communication and engagement in behavioral and cultural change.
  • Skilled in research modalities and analysis.
  • Excellent drafting skills and ability to communicate effectively to varied audiences. Strong presentation skills.
  • Strong written and oral communications skills.
  • Excellent analytical, conceptual and design thinking.
  • Ability to work with multiple teams in a multi-cultural environment.
  • Fluency in English is required. Knowledge of another official UN language (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian or Spanish) or a local language is an asset.

Individuals engaged under a consultancy or individual contract will not be considered “staff members” under the Staff Regulations and Rules of the United Nations and UNICEF’s policies and procedures, and will not be entitled to benefits provided therein (such as leave entitlements and medical insurance coverage). Their conditions of service will be governed by their contract and the General Conditions of Contracts for the Services of Consultants and Individual Contractors. Consultants and individual contractors are responsible for determining their tax liabilities and for the payment of any taxes and/or duties, in accordance with local or other applicable laws.

The selected candidate is solely responsible to ensure that the visa (applicable) and health insurance required to perform the duties of the contract are valid for the entire period of the contract. Selected candidates are subject to confirmation of fully-vaccinated status against SARS-CoV-2 (Covid-19) with a World Health Organization (WHO)-endorsed vaccine, which must be met prior to taking up the assignment. It does not apply to consultants who will work remotely and are not expected to work on or visit UNICEF premises, programme delivery locations or directly interact with communities UNICEF works with, nor to travel to perform functions for UNICEF for the duration of their consultancy contracts.
