Overview

Assist in the editorial and desktop publishing process of UN documents in Chinese.

You have:

  • Must be a student in the final year of a bachelor's, master's, or Ph.D. programme or have completed one.
  • Fluency in Chinese as the main language and fluency in English is required.
  • Good knowledge of standard software applications, especially MS Word, MS Excel, MS PowerPoint, InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator.
  • Interest in the work of the United Nations and commitment to the ideals of the Charter.
  • Ability to interact successfully with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs.

Duties and Responsibilities

Interns will be responsible for the following duties: (1) Learn to facilitate the process of editorial and desktop publishing of UN documents in Chinese; assist to produce camera-ready documents for reproduction by typing, transcribing, editing and formatting documents, as well as creating tables, graphics and organizational charts, in desktop publishing layout, in accordance with existing guidelines. (2) Participate, as a member of a team, in the production of various types of United Nations documentations, by preparing desktop publishing layout of the final product, in the relevant language, for reproduction in hard copy and electronic dissemination. (3) Aligns bi-texts in order to support the production of high-quality translation memories for computer-assisted translation (CAT), machine translation (MT) and related workflow improvements. (4) Perform other modified text-processing functions developed under the Global Terminology, Reference and Translation Solutions (gText) project or related workflow reviews, participate in the ongoing modernization process of new work methods. (5) Inputs data into databases and assists in the analysis of data, as well as the preparation of data presentations and reports, for information-sharing, responding to queries, knowledge management, planning and decision-making. (6) Collaborates with team members to perform, under supervision, the full range of office support, administrative and clerical functions, when required. (7)Undertakes cross-assignments to perform, under guidance, other language support functions, if required. (8)Perform other related work as required, including echelon service and relevant assignments.

Qualifications/special skills

Applicants must be a student in the final year of the first university degree (bachelor or equivalent), Master’s or Ph.D. Programme or equivalent, or have completed a Bachelor’s, Master’s or PH.D. Applicants should have good knowledge of standard software applications, especially MS Word, MS Exel, MS PowerPoint, InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator, etc. Knowledge and skills of database maintenance and drafting statistics reports are desirable. Applicants to the UN Internship Programme are not required to have professional work experience. However, a field of study that is closely related to the type of internship that you are applying for is required. Applicants must have a demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter; and have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views. Languages

Fluency in Chinese which must be the candidate's main language and fluency in English is required. Knowledge of a third official language would be an asset. The official languages of the United Nations are: Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish.
