Background Information - Job-specific

The United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS) is an operational arm of the United Nations, supporting the successful implementation of its partners' peacebuilding, humanitarian and development projects around the world. Mandated as a central resource of the United Nations, UNOPS provides sustainable project management, procurement and infrastructure services to a wide range of governments, donors and United Nations organisations. With over 6,000 personnel spread across 80 countries, UNOPS offers its partners the logistical, technical and management knowledge they need, where they need it. By implementing around 1,000 projects for our partners at any given time, UNOPS makes significant contributions to results on the ground, often in the most challenging environments.

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the United Nations system’s designated entity for addressing environmental issues at the global and regional level. Its mandate is to coordinate the development of environmental policy consensus by keeping the global environment under review and bringing emerging issues to the attention of governments and the international community for action.

UNEP, in partnership with the Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI), serves as the joint host of the Green Growth Knowledge Platform (GGKP) Secretariat on behalf of the GGKP Steering Committee (UNEP, GGGI, the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development, and the World Bank).

GGKP is an established global knowledge broker, supporting a global community of policy, business, and finance professionals and organisations committed to collaboratively generating, managing, and sharing knowledge on the transition to an inclusive green and circular economy. The mission of GGKP is to empower government decision makers, companies and financial institutions with evidence-based knowledge that can best support them to contribute effectively to the green and circular economy transition.

GGKP provides its best practice knowledge brokerage services through its three core platforms, the Green Policy Platform, the Green Industry Platform, and the Green Finance Platform, as well as its online interactive community space, the Green Forum. In addition to its three platforms and the Green Forum, GGKP also provides targeted knowledge management, communication and stakeholder engagement services for three global projects funded under the Global Environment Facility (GEF).

GGKP is co-implementing the EU Funded Action “Accelerating the global transition to a green and circular economy”, with responsibility for the project components relating to enhancing green and circular economy knowledge generation, management and sharing globally. An overarching objective of this project is to ensure a clear alignment between those stakeholders that, 1) produce knowledge, 2) provide enabling policy environment and financial supports, and 3) those that are the end-users of the same. A particular focus under GGKP’s scope of work is on SMEs and the organizations supporting them in the uptake of circularity actions, such as resource efficiency.

The GGKP Knowledge Management and Engagement Coordinator will be based in Geneva, Switzerland, and will be responsible for developing and coordinating the activities of the EU funded green and circular economy project across GGKP’s platforms and where relevant in collaboration with GGKP’s GEF funded projects. The position will require working with GGKP personnel, consultants, and subcontractors on the project to ensure timely, effective, and well-coordinated responses to the needs of the project overall. This work will involve playing a leading role in the update and implementation of GGKP’s overarching knowledge brokerage strategy to ensure it benefits not just GGKP platforms and projects but also its partner institutions.

The position will also provide the Head of Secretariat with innovative and strategic advice to increase the overall impact of the GGKP and be responsible for close interaction with UNEP, the European Commission (project contracting authority), senior officers and technical staff from GGKP partner institutions and senior representatives and officials in national governments, international organizations, and business supporting organisations, amongst others.
