JOB TITLE: Knowledge Management and Communication Consultant

TYPE OF CONTRACT: International Consultant

UNIT/DIVISION: Resilience Unit/Programme

DUTY STATION (City, Country): Kinshasa, DR Congo (with travels to the field)

DURATION: 11 months

DEADLINE FOR APPLICATIONS: 31 August 2021

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE OF THE ASSIGNMENT:

The Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) is one of the most fertile countries on earth, with the potential to feed all of its inhabitants and even export food commodities. The country is home to approximately 80 million hectares of arable land as well as approximately 50 percent of the continent’s water resources.

Despite its vast natural resources, DRC’s potential remains largely unexploited and it remains one of the poorest countries in the world. Some 63 percent of the population (of approximately 81 million) living below the poverty line. Agriculture and related services provide livelihood to almost 75 percent of the population. However, 15.6 million people were reckoned to be food insecure in 2019, making DRC the second largest hunger crisis in the world after Yemen.

Furthermore, 3.4 million children are acutely malnourished, as well as 800,000 pregnant and lactating women and girls (LW&G).

Compounding the situation is the perennial civil instability and conflict – particularly in the east of the country and the Kasai provinces – contributing to large-scale population displacements, disrupting agricultural activities and impeding access to markets, schools and healthcare.

Nevertheless, some areas of relative stability has enabled implementation of resilience building activities targeting returnees, host families and other vulnerable people.

Currently, the WFP resilience programme is active in Tanganyika, North Ubangi and South Ubangi, North and South Kivu with funds provided by the governments of Sweden, Germany, Norway and Canada and is about to start in the Kasai and Kasai central. The joint resilience partnership between FAO and WFP has also been recently expanded to include UNICEF, UNHCR and UNFPA.
