Description of task

Under the direct supervision of UN Women Programme Specialist, the UN Youth Volunteer will undertake the following tasks:

  • Support the Programme Specialist with research on issues related to gender equality and women empowerment issues in ethnic minorities in Viet Nam.

  • Support the development of briefs, proposal, reports, speeches, presentations, case stories, publications.

  • Assist the Programme Specialist in preparation and organization of meetings, workshops, trainings, and events.
  • Assist the Programme Specialist in the office’s evaluation activities, including the evaluation of the 4-year UN Women programme on the empowerment of ethnic minority women and girls in Viet Nam funded by Irish Aid.
  • Assist the coordination mandate of UN Women, including the operations of the informal working group of Head of Agencies and Ambassadors on gender equality and UN Gender Theme Group.
  • As a part of UN Women Programme Team, the youth volunteer will participate in programme meetings/updates and contribute inputs to UN Women programme activities.

  • Perform any other tasks as assigned by the supervisor.

Qualifications/Requirements

Required degree level:

Bachelor degree or equivalent

Education - Additional Comments:

Bachelor’s degree in social sciences, gender and development studies or economics

Required experience:

Experience remark:

  • Demonstrated interest and/or experience (up to 2 years) in promoting gender equality and women’s empowerment required
  • Experience in research and drafting research reports required.

  • Motivated to contribute towards peace and development and to serve others;

  • Good interpersonal, networking and communication skills;
  • Willingness to contribute and work as part of a team;
  • Flexible and open to learning and new experiences;
  • Respect for diversity and adaptability to other cultures, environments and living conditions;

  • Fluency in spoken and written English is required;

  • Previous experience as a volunteer and/or experience of another culture, (i.e. studies, volunteer work, internship) would be highly regarded;
  • Computer skills (i.e. Word, Excel, PowerPoint, social media, and others).

Language skills:

  • English(Mandatory), Level - Fluent

Learning Expectations

Learning and development are a central part of the UN Youth Volunteer’s assignment and take place before, during and after his or her assignment in the field. Ideally, offering diverse opportunities for learning and development aim to strengthen the volunteer’s skills and competences, improve the quality of the assignment and keep the volunteer’s motivation high.

Learning elements for the UN Youth Volunteer include the development of:

  • Professional skills: including specific competencies and reflection on assignment-related abilities; and on-the-job skills such as time management, problem solving, team building; and career preparedness such as interview skills, CV preparation, job searching.

  • Interpersonal skills: including communication and listening skills; multi-cultural awareness and cultural competency; and conflict and stress management.

  • Volunteering-related skills: including leadership; civic responsibility; and engagement and active participation.

Beyond the learning opportunities provided by UNV, the host agency will support knowledge and capacity development in the technical areas that are relevant to the UN Youth Volunteer’s assignment. The host agency will provide, at its expense, UN Youth Volunteers with equal opportunity to participate in training courses and workshops offered to its personnel.

UN Youth Volunteers should be between 18 and 29 years old throughout the duration of their service.
