This is a UNV International Youth contract. This kind of contract is known as International UN Volunteer. It is normally internationally recruited only. More about UNV International Youth contracts.

For 70 years, UNICEF has been working on the ground in 190 countries and territories to promote children's survival, protection and development. The world's largest provider of vaccines for developing countries, UNICEF supports child health and nutrition, good water and sanitation, quality basic education for all boys and girls, and the protection of children from violence, exploitation, and AIDS. Under the direct supervision of the Chief of Child Protection, the UN Volunteer will undertake the following tasks: • Provide support for the implementation of the justice sector project: support to legal aid; capacity building of lawyers and other justice sector professionals; technical input for amendments to laws; documentation of lessons learned and case studies from the field; • Provide support for communication and report writing on the justice sector project • Provide support work on the budget analysis for Alternative Care • Provide support work on modelling of deinstitutionalization • The UNV will also have the possibility to choose a research area and write up a policy brief/report on that area related to the justice sector project • Other tasks as needed in the section

or demonstrated interest and/or experience of one year of experience in child protection/justice for children – or at least evidence of an interest in this field Previous experience as a volunteer and/or experience of another culture, (i.e. studies, volunteer work, internship) would be highly regarded. Interested in child rights, justice for children and alternative care; a good communicator and team player; willingness to travel to the field; experience in working on child protection and/or justice for children projects an advantage.

Colombo is situated on the Western Province of Sri Lanka and is the commercial capital of the country. Colombo is located on the west coast of the island and adjacent to the administrative capital, Sri Jayawardenepura, Kotte. The climate is fairly temperate all throughout the year but humidity is usually high. From March to April the temperature averages around 31 degrees Celsius (88 degrees Fahrenheit). The only major change in the Colombo weather occurs during the monsoon seasons from May to August and October to January when heavy rainfalls occur.

There is a range of housing options in Colombo as well as good healthcare and education options. Crime rates are low and violent burglaries rare. Air pollution, traffic and dengue fever are the main issues.
