RoLSHR project developed entry points for UNDP's long-term programming on enabling an environment for protecting and promoting human rights at the national and local levels and improved access to justice for vulnerable communities in Azerbaijan. This was built on the lessons learned from UNDP's current projects, long-standing work with vulnerable communities and rooted in the principles of inclusiveness and Leave No One Behind (LNOB).

The Project will help focus on mainstreaming the Human Rights-Based Approach (HRBA) and Human Rights Due Diligence (HRDDP) both within the capacities of the country office and among national partners.

UNDP aims to conduct capacity building training for respective national partners on legal aid on civil and administrative laws and to develop new guideline on legal aid. By doing this, UNDP supports the work done by the Government of Azerbaijan to make legal services accessible to every citizen of the country.

The project’s main areas of activities as follows:

  • Providing free legal aid in 9 regions of Azerbaijan to the vulnerable groups
  • Working on baseline assessment on Business and Human Rights in Partnership with Om-buds Office
  • Building capacity of various partners such as members of the Bar, Mediation Council, Ombuds Office, academia,

CSOs and others on various topics of Human Rights

  • Conducting research on various human rights topics such as legal aid, Data Protection and AI UN Volunteer will support the project on various day-to-day tasks, as well as conduct desk research on various human rights topics as needed, assist with preparation of ppts, and organizing events.

Under the direct supervision of Project Officer, the UN Volunteer will undertake the following tasks:

1 year of experience or demonstrated interest in Human Rights/Rule of Law and/or research. Previous experience as a volunteer and/or experience of another culture, (i.e. studies, volunteer work, internship) would be highly regarded.

Azerbaijan is officially known as the Republic of Azerbaijan. It is a transcontinental country, formerly The Soviet Union, and is bounded by the Caucasus Mountains and the Caspian Sea. It is a Turkic state which forms part of the Middle East, West Asia, and Eastern Europe.

The total population of the country comprised 10.15 million residents and covered a total land area of 86 600 km². Its capital city, Baku, is world-renowned for its Medieval Walled Inner City. It is very rich in oil reserves and the country has a rich and long history.

The country is an upper-middle-income nation. Azerbaijan has a high level of literacy and economic development. The country’s poverty and unemployment rates have fallen significantly over the past few decades

Crime is relatively low in Azerbaijan. The country has a crime index of 31.82 and a safety index of 68.18. These numbers are calculated from surveys that visitors and locals freely engage in. Visitors and locals feel fairly safe.

Azerbaijan has a relatively pleasant climate. The country experiences hot summers and mild winters. The hottest months of the year are July and August, while the coldest months are December through February. The average temperate range is between 43°F during the colder months and 86°F during the warmer months. But, bearing in mind, the average temperature ranges differ quite significantly in different regions and altitudes. There are nine climate zones in the country.

Simply put, Azerbaijani cuisine is divine! The cuisine in this country is a blend of perfectly seasoned meat, dark spices, and delicious vegetables. The secret to their cuisine is fresh ingredients, herbs, and incorporating a variety of spices. You can almost taste the history and deep culture rooted in each dish.

The country ranks in the top position worldwide for the highest literacy rate. According to Statista.com, the country has a literacy rate of 99.8%.This refers to the percentage of the population above the age of 15 that can read and write.

As this is a international UN Volunteer assignment, the UN Volunteer will be responsible for arranging his/her own housing and other living essentials.

UN Volunteer entitlements and allowances: The purpose of the allowances and entitlements paid to UN Volunteers is to enable UN Volunteers to sustain a secure standard of living at the duty stations in line with United Nations standards without incurring personal costs. The allowances are in no way to be understood as compensation, reward, or salary in exchange for the UN Volunteer’s service. Contingent on specific eligibility criteria, location of the volunteer assignment and contractual type and category, the payment of allowances will begin from the date of Commencement of Service For more information on entitlements please read the Condition of Service (https://explore.unv.org/cos).

Monthly Living Allowance (Per month): USD 2102.94 Entry lump sum (one-time payment): USD 4000 Family allowance (per month, if eligible): USD 250 for 1 dependent or USD 450 for two and more Exit allowance (for each month served, paid on completion of contract): USD225

Leave entitlements:

Annual leave: 2.5 days accrued per calendar month Certified sick leave: 30 days for 12 months Uncertified sick leave: 7 days for 12 months and 4 days for shorter assignments Learning leave: 10 working days per consecutive 12 months (shorter assignments are prorated) Maternity Leave: 16 weeks Paternity Leave: 10 days
