This is a UNV National Specialist contract. This kind of contract is known as National UN Volunteer. It is normally only for nationals. More about UNV National Specialist contracts.

This UNV assignment is part of UNHCR’s operations in Mafraq, Jordan which host over 160,000 refugees and includes Zaatari Camp. The assigned UN Volunteer will be expected to provide consecutive interpretation on field missions or in support of operations at the office.

Availability that his/her likeness appears on media, social media, photos, and videos as it will be impossible for UNHCR to prevent such appearances on the public or external occasion s/he will interpret. S/He will need to understand that her/his picture will possibly be seen on the internet.

National UN Specialist Volunteers in Jordan are entitled to: • Monthly Volunteer Living Allowance (VLA) at the amount of JOD 1,068.5; • Annual and learning leaves; • Free Medical and life insurance; and • Free access to different learning platforms.

Under the supervision of the Communications Associate the National UN Volunteer will undertake the following tasks: • Provides translation and interpretation for UNHCR staff, partners or missions, or any activities; • Provides interpretation during individual or group meetings or discussions with refugees; • Interprets during meetings, workshops, and any other ad hoc gatherings; • Translates documents, reports, video etc from and into English and Arabic. • Provides administrative support with organization of workshops and meetings. • Performs any other related tasks as may be required or assigned by the supervisor.

Interpretation between English and Arabic in a refugee context. • Professional work experience at the community or national NGO level in social work, community development or other relevant programmes is an asset, as is experience working in the UN. • Excellent oral and written skills; excellent drafting, formulation, reporting skills. • Accuracy and professionalism in document production and editing. • Ability to work and adapt professionally and effectively in a challenging environment; ability to work effectively in a multicultural team of international and national personnel. • Excellent interpersonal skills; culturally and socially sensitive; ability to communicate with a range of stakeholders including community members, partner organizations, and authorities. • Solid overall computer literacy, including proficiency in various MS Office applications. • Self-motivated, ability to work with minimum supervision; ability to work with tight deadlines. • Confident to appear in media, social media, photos and videos in the course of public or external occasions where s/he will interpret. • Sound security awareness.

Mafraq, the assignment’s duty station, is the capital city of Mafraq Governorate and is located 80 km to the north of Amman. People are friendly to visitors. Services in terms of banking, transportation, health and communications are easily available. Road network is good both in terms of spread and quality of the roads. Public transportation in Mafraq is limited. Taxis are relatively cheap and easily available. There are a number of shops and restaurants. Accommodation options can be found; however, it is worth noting that prices have generally increased in the past few years. There are no specific security threats. According to the assessment of the UN Department of Safety & Security (UNDSS) Jordan is a family duty station (category B hardship).

As this is a national UN Volunteer assignment, the UN Volunteer will be responsible for arranging his/her own housing and other living essentials. National UN Volunteers are part of the insurance plan.
