The UNICEF Internship Programme offers eligible/qualified students at both Headquarters and country offices the opportunity to acquire direct practical experience in UNICEF's work under the direct supervision of experienced UNICEF staff. This internship is for the purpose of acquiring organizational knowledge of rules, regulations and processes to supplement academic and theoretical knowledge.

Under the guidance of the Advocacy Specialist and Partnerships Manager this intern provides professional communications, advocacy and administrative assistance throughout the internship period for the partnerships team within the WASH section. This will entail supporting with strategic communications and advocacy materials and updates, as well as maintaining the UNICEF Water social media channels.

Main duties and tasks:

The key results from this internship are summarised as follows:

  1. Develop a social media strategy and plan for UNICEF Water Twitter, Instagram and Facebook channels. Create content and post regularly to these channels following said plan.
  2. Support the partnerships team with drafting of key messages, concept notes, advocacy briefs and related communications materials. Some administrative support may also be requested.
  3. Liaise with relevant teams within WASH and GCA to obtain inputs and expertise when needed.

Benefits to intern:

The intern will be exposed to the different areas of work within the UNICEF Division of Global Communications and Advocacy (GCA) and Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) team, which will strengthen their capacity. The intern will also obtain a solid understanding of how UNICEF undertakes strategic communications and advocacy, particularly around high level events. The intern can also participate in webinars, online trainings, and will have access to the internal Communication and Collaboration sites within the WASH and GCA teams, which will serve as an enormous resource.

Requirements qualifications: (Education, Language, etc):

The key requirements are outlined as follows:

  • Be enrolled in an undergraduate, graduate or Ph.D. degree programme or have graduated within the past two years in communications, marketing, international relations, international development, water/environmental studies, or related field
  • Prior experience with digital communications and social media strategy would be a considerable asset
  • Demonstrated advanced writing skills (digital communications, public advocacy and social media)
  • Fluent in English
  • Working knowledge of another UN language would be an asset

To be considered for an internship with UNICEF, applicants must meet the following requirements:

  • Be enrolled in a degree programme in an undergraduate or graduate school, or be a recent graduate (within the last 2 years);
  • Have strong academic performance as demonstrated by recent university or institution records or, if not available, a reference letter from an academic supervisor;
  • Have no immediate relatives (e.g. father, mother, brother or sister) working in any UNICEF office; and
  • Have no other relatives in the line of authority which the intern will report to

Modality of hiring the Intern:

Location:

UNICEF offices are in New York, but the intern will have flexibility to work fully or partially remote, while aligning fully or partially to core New York working hours. There is not expected to be any official travel to country offices under this assignment.

Insurance:

UNICEF will not be responsible for costs arising from accidents and/or illness incurred during the intern’s service, whether on or off UNICEF premises. Therefore, the selected candidate must provide proof of enrolment in a health/accident plan prior to start his/her work. If accepted, the intern will be required to provide a copy of health insurance coverage and to fill out the relevant UNICEF forms on conditions regarding service as an intern.

Living conditions and working environment:

S/he will work with hiring section and report to the supervisor of this internship. S/he is not expected to travel out of this duty station during the assignment. A flexible workspace will be provided. The intern will be expected to participate in Section's meetings, as well as other UNICEF meetings of interest to the student, including the seminar series for UNICEF interns. Guidance will be provided on a regular basis.
