Background

The UN Resident Coordinator provides leadership to the UN Country Team (UNCT) in the implementation of the UN Pacific Strategy. The RC has a team composed of national and international staff, forming the Fiji RC Multi-Country Office (RCO), and is based in Suva, Fiji. The RCO Fiji oversees 10 Pacific Small Island Developing States (PSIDS), namely Federated States of Micronesia (FSM), Fiji, Kiribati, Marshall Islands, Nauru, Palau, Solomon Islands, Tonga, Tuvalu, and Vanuatu.

The United Nations Pacific Strategy 2018-2022 is a five year strategic framework that outlines the collective response of the UN system to the development priorities in 14 Pacific Island Countries and Territories and supports the governments and peoples in the Pacific to advance a localized response to the global 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. This response is tailored to each country’s national priorities, and responds to the Pacific Leaders’ call to the United Nations system to “align its work programmes and operations to support internationally agreed outcomes, including the Small Islands Developing States, Accelerated Modalities of Action (SAMOA) Pathway, the Addis Ababa Action Agenda and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, in the Pacific region” (2015 GA res. 69/318).

Supporting the implementation of the United Nations Pacific Strategy the RCO fulfils ten core coordination functions, namely strategic analysis and planning; oversight of the UN country programming cycle; representation of and support of UN Secretariat and UN agencies (incl. non-resident agencies); support to national coordination systems and processes; development and management of shared operational support services; crisis management preparedness and response; external communication and advocacy; human rights and development; joint resource mobilisation and fund management; and general UNCT oversight and coordination. Each area plays an important role in achieving supporting the achievement of Sustainable Development Goals for the region.

The UN Resident Coordination Office in Suva (UNRCO) is seeking an intern to be part of the team working on the Socio-Economic impact assessment of COVID 19 in the Pacific for its office located in Suva, Fiji. Working under the guidance and supervision of the RCO Team Leader, and working closely with UNRCO team, the intern will support the ongoing workplan for the Socio-Economic Impact Assessment (SEIA) of COVID 19 focusing on Pillar1 of the UN framework for the immediate socio-economic response to COVID-19Health First: Protecting Health Services and Systems during the Crisis.

Duties and Responsibilities

Under the guidance & supervision of the RCO team Leader, and in close collaboration with other colleagues in the UNRCO, the intern will assist in the following tasks:

  • Support the implementation of workplan for the Socio-Economic impact assessment of COVID 19 focusing on Pillar 1 of the UN framework for the immediate socio-economic response to COVID-19- Health First: Protecting Health Services and Systems during the Crisis;
  • Support substantive research and analysis, including gathering and review of specialist reports to support preparation of briefings and concept notes related to the impact of COVID 19 on health systems;
  • Coordination support to the SEIA task force with the preparation of meetings, support the preparation of background and option papers and tracking and analysis of decisions and their implementation, take minutes and organize data and documents as needed;
  • Assist the UNRCO in organizing events, launches of publications, seminars etc related to SEIA of COVID 19 in the Pacific;
  • Assist UNRCO Joint Incident Management Team (JIMT) Focal point in a day to day coordination tasks related to JIMT;
  • Provide administrative support on an as-needed basis;
  • Other relevant tasks as deemed necessary by the supervisor.

  • Candidates must be enrolled in a degree programme in Public health
  • Previous research experience in the field of related to Public Health is desirable

Applicants to the internship programme must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements:

  • Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or
  • equivalent, or higher);
  • Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor’s level or equivalent);
  • Have graduated with a university degree (as defined in (a) and (b) above) and, if selected, must start the internship within one-year of graduation.

Work Experience & Desired Skillset:

  • Excellent writing skills, as well as strong analytical aptitude and strong communication skills;
  • Ability to manage workload with minimum supervision and collaborate with a wide range of colleagues while meeting deadlines;
  • Excellent interpersonal skills: being able to listen and collaborate with a wide range of players, being able to work independently, being pro-active and taking initiative;
  • Be able to work both independently and as part of a team;
  • Computer proficiency: MS Office.

General Internships Terms & Conditions:

  • UNRCO Internship programme is governed by the UNDP Internship policy framework & rules.
  • Under the new revised UNDP internship policy, UNRCO will provide a modest monthly internship stipend to its interns, in accordance with the provisions of the UNDP Internship policy. All expenses connected with the internship will be borne by the intern.
  • Selected Interns must be able to share proof of education enrolment and/ or graduation, medical/ health and life/accident insurance, valid for the location in which the internship will be carried out and be able to provide insurance documentary proof at the time of their selection;
  • There is no expectation of employment at the end of these internships.

UNRCO is committed to providing the intern with the training, guidance and support necessary to complete the above duties and responsibilities effectively and within the internship period. This will include, but not be limited to, scheduled meetings (weekly) to assess output progress, systems training (if required) and completion of required university reports for the purpose of meeting any necessary Degree requirements.

Candidates who are shortlisted for an interview must submit prior to the interview the following documents:

  • Official letter from the University confirming enrollment in a graduate-level degree programme (and graduation date);
  • Letter of endorsement from a senior faculty member who has directly supervised the student in the recent past and who is fully acquainted with the student's performance;
  • Copy of school transcript;
  • A brief statement setting out the reasons why he/she is seeking an internship with UNRC and what is expected from the experience;
  • Medical Certificate of Good Health from a recognized physician prior to starting the internship.
  • Interns are responsible for securing adequate medical insurance for the duration of their internship with UNRC
  • The successful candidate will be advised of his/her selection within two weeks of being interviewed.
