The Middle East and North Africa Regional Office is a hub for information, technical expertise, oversight and coordination for offices in 19 countries serving a population of 178 million children.

UNICEF has sustained presence in the local, regional and international media outlets as a principal advocate for children rights. UNICEF strives to shed the light on the humanitarian situation of children in the Middle East and North Africa region, particularly children in countries impacted by conflict, and to ensure their rights are upheld and wellbeing maintained. UNICEF had an increasingly important role during the COVID-19 pandemic, acting as a reliable source for awareness raising content.

An intern is needed for the month of October to support the UNICEF Middle East North Africa (MENA) communications news and media team.

The news and media intern at UNICEF MENA communications section will contribute to improved media monitoring and open source insights, developing content tailored for external audience, and provide suggestions on better engagement with new media outlets. Specific tasks are highlighted below.

How can you make a difference?

The goal of this internship opportunity is to further UNICEF’s MENA Regional Office communications work related to crisis affected countries. This will be done by raising the visibility of the situation for children affected and by driving engagement to support the UNICEF’s response to the crises in Syria and across the region.

Description of Assignment:

The intern’s tasks will range from drafting and editing content to monitoring and tracking media engagement and coverage of certain issues and UNICEF’s work. The intern will also be responsible for working on MENA RO publications from research, to quality control and distribution.

Key deliverables:

  • Support data gathering and fact-checking for communication products and factsheets.
  • Monitor and gather news clippings on key humanitarian and political developments in the region. Support daily news round up and gathering coverage on specific emergency-related issues.
  • Support with the mapping of regional and international media outlets, key festivals, and outreach opportunities.
  • Help monitor the impact of communications outreach mainly on emergencies and support media tracking to feed into monthly monitoring and evaluation reports.
  • Draft and support editing of human-interest stories and other web content shared with the RO for clearance.
  • Assist in development, quality control and distribution of UNICEF Regional Office publications.
  • Provide other assistance to the Communications Team as required, including in social media and drafting of media blogs.

To qualify as an advocate for every child you will…

  • Be enrolled in an undergraduate university degree (Bachelor’s or equivalent)
  • A relevant background in Political Science, International Relations, Global Studies, Communications and media, Journalism, or any other relevant field.
  • Fluency in English is required. Knowledge of Arabic is an asset.
