Internships

The IAEA accepts a limited number of interns each year. The internships are awarded to persons studying towards a university degree or who have recently received a degree (see Internship web pages for further details).

The purpose of the programme is: To provide interns with the opportunity to gain practical work experience in line with their studies or interests, and expose them to the work of the IAEA and the United Nations as a whole; To benefit the IAEA's programmes through the assistance of qualified students specialized in various professional fields. The duration of an internship is normally not less than three months and not more than one year.

Organizational Setting

The Department of Management (MT) provides a 'platform of services' that serves as a foundation for the successful delivery of the IAEA's scientific and technical programmes. Its mission statement is as follows: "MT is a partner and a business enabler that champions change and efficiency, leveraging a common purpose". Thus, among other support activities, it assists a scientific manager in recruiting the right expert, helps a technical officer coordinate the purchase of radiation equipment and ensures that all Board documents are translated and distributed on a timely basis to Member States.

The Division of Human Resources plans, acquires and manages human resources to help implement IAEA programmes. The Division delivers the full spectrum of HR services, including organizational development and planning, talent acquisition and development, performance management, and administration of compensation and benefits. The Division serves a multicultural workforce of approximately 2300 people from diverse scientific, technical, managerial and professional disciplines.

The Recruitment and Staff Development Section provides HR services to the IAEA's technical programmes, and advice to managers in the areas of talent acquisition, development, and performance management. The Section consists of two Units. The Recruitment Unit is responsible for talent acquisition, testing, placement and promotion. The Staff Development Unit is responsible for the planning and delivery of training courses, and for monitoring performance management.

Main Purpose

Reporting to the HR Policy Specialist and working directly with the Gender Equality Officer, the Gender Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Intern will support the work of the Division of Human Resources related to gender equality, diversity and inclusion including efforts towards achieving gender parity and creating and sustaining an inclusive and enabling work environment. The Gender Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Intern will also support other projects within the division of Human Resources as requested.

Functions / Key Results Expected

  • Support the coordination of activities and events that strengthen awareness and knowledge on gender equality, diversity, and inclusion, particularly on relevant international days and alongside relevant IAEA conferences;
  • Respond to internal requests for guidance on integrating gender equality content into internal and/or external communications such as articles, talking points, and presentations.
  • Facilitate or co-facilitate gender-related trainings as requested.
  • Prepare and edit drafts of reports, guidelines, briefing notes and similar documents on human resource and gender equality matters;
  • Support the IAEA's coordination of the Vienna hub of the International Gender Champions network;
  • Conduct background research related to human resource policies involving academic research papers, private and public sector best practices, other international organizations' policies and guidelines;
  • Support the development of promotional and outreach materials;
  • Support other activities of the Division of Human Resources as required.

Qualifications and Experience

  • University degree (in progress or recently completed) in Gender/Women's Studies, Human Resources, International Relations, Human Rights, Social Sciences or a related field;
  • Experience in drafting documents and reports in English;
  • Experience in an international work environment is highly desirable;
  • Excellent written and spoken English is essential; fluency in any other IAEA official language (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian) is an asset.

Applicant Eligibility

  • Candidates must be a minimum of 20 years of age and have completed at least three years of full-time studies at a university or equivalent institution towards the completion of a first degree.
  • Candidates may apply up to one year after the completion of a bachelor's, master's or doctorate degree.
  • Candidates must not have previously participated in the IAEA's internship programme.
  • Good written and spoken English essential; fluency in any other IAEA official language (Arabic, Chinese, French, Spanish or Russian) an asset.
  • Candidates must attach two signed letters of recommendation to their application.
