Government of India (GOI) has decided to establish 15 National Midwifery Training Institutes (NMTIs), which will train the State Midwifery Educators and each state will set up 3-4 State Midwifery Training Institutes in cascade manner. Each of the NMTIs will have International Midwifery Educators (IMEs), who will provide all around support to State Midwifery educators for enhancing the technical and professional skills which were required to execute the programme. The IMEs will work closely with the Colleges of Nursing, attached clinical sites (department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology of medical colleges) and other health care providers as part of an inter-professional collaborative team and UNICEF. IMEs will provide training to the midwifery educators in the National Midwifery Training Institute (NMTI) for ensuring quality maternal and newborn health services and provide mentoring support on the alternative birthing positions by promoting positive child birthing experience, reduce over medicalization and promote respectful maternity care. The overall goal is to prepare National and State level Midwifery Educators at equivalence with ICM standards and WHO educational competencies, that will support the implementation of the government program to establish midwifery services in India. Therefore, the International Midwifery Educators will play a critical role in supporting Government efforts to establish Midwifery as a professional cadre in India, which will accelerate improvements in Maternal and Newborn health, and Family Planning programmes. Evidence have shown that safe and effective midwifery care can avert 83% of all maternal deaths, stillbirths and newborn deaths (Lancet Series on Midwifery; 2014). Midwifery training program comprise of 18 months schedule with 12 months theory and clinical mix’ followed by 6 months internship program. UNICEF is one of the lead technical partners to MoHFW for supporting and rolling out Midwifery Initiative in the country and has agreed to support three International Midwifery Educator (IME) in each of the NMTI in the states of Odisha, Gujarat, West Bengal and Andhra Pradesh.

Under the supervision of assigned authority and UNICEF Representative or his/her designated mandated representative(s), the International Midwifery Educator will perform the following tasks:  Provide onsite physical academic training including theory and clinical mix to the selected midwifery educators in NMTI for 6 months in NMTI followed by mentoring support during the 12 months internship program as per the curriculum approved by Indian Nursing Council (INC).  Using a variety of student-centered teaching / learning approaches, support the acquisition of knowledge, necessary skills and behaviors to attain essential ICM and WHO  To enhance expertise in the care of alternative birthing positions, as well as the identification, stabilization and referral of complications. Demonstrate evidence-based clinical practices and values needed to change historical practices, as required.  Train Professional Midwives to identify deviations from the normal physiological birth, recognizing high-risk pregnancies as well as complications at the time of birth.  Guide midwifery educators through research and use of evidence-based guidelines in line with available national maternal health and newborn care guidelines.  Support and demonstrate quality clinical supervision of midwifery educator trainees in the clinical practice site/s as per ICM standards  Plan and facilitate continuing midwifery education sessions.  Conduct clinical audits and review meetings.  Conduct Assessment and appraisal of midwifery educators as per curriculum.  Assess micro teaching skills of the trainees  Support in establishment and operationalization of the Midwife Led Care Units (MLCU).  Facilitate the rotations of the midwifery educators to provide them comprehensive knowledge of midwifery care  Maintenance of academic documentation/clinical records and conduct audits time to time.  Liaise between the appropriate authority and trainees.

International experience of clinical mentorship in Midwifery Strong interpersonal relations, communication and team-work skills required along with ability to work and communicate effectively with people from different backgrounds  Programme management, program review capacity building and supervisory support experience is required.  Willingness to provide a substantial amount of his/her time to travel to states for program support  Proficiency in computers (Microsoft Office)  Demonstrated ability to support student-centered learning using a variety of teaching and training approaches.  Proficiency in English with good presentation skills Qualified in the midwifery and nursing care  Diploma in Midwifery from an accredited/recognized institute is required  Registration as a midwife in home country  Five-year post registration experience along with three-year clinical experience in maternity ward or Midwifery Lead Care Units.

a. Cuttack (Odisha)- Family Duty Station- Cuttack is the former capital and the second largest city in the Indian state of Odisha. The city is categorised as a Tier-II city as per the ranking system used by Government of India. It is the commercial capital of Odisha which hosts many trading and business houses in and around the city. Cuttack is just 26km from the Capital city (Bhubaneshwar) of Odisha and is well connected with Bhubaneshwar through road and rail routes. Cuttack and Bhubaneswar are often referred to as the Twin-Cities of Odisha. Cuttack experiences a tropical wet and dry climate. Odia is the primary language used in the city, besides which English and Hindi may be spoken and understood.

b. Ahmedabad (Gujarat): Family Duty Station -Ahmedabad is located near the banks of the Sabarmati River 25 km from the capital of Gujarat, Gandhinagar, also known as its twin city. Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport, 15 km from the city centre, provides domestic and international flights for Ahmedabad and the capital Gandhinagar. Ahmedabad has emerged as an important economic and industrial hub in India. It is the administrative headquarters of Ahmedabad district, administered by the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation. The city has well established metro services, rail and road transportation. The city experiences three main seasons: summer, monsoon and winter.

c. Kolkata (West Bengal): Family Duty Station – Kolkata is a metropolitan city, located on the eastern bank of the Hooghly River, the city is approximately 80 kilometres west of the border with Bangladesh. It is the primary business, commercial, and financial hub of Eastern India and the main port of communication for North-East India. Kolkata is subject to a tropical wet-and-dry climate with annual mean temperature of 26.8 °C. Public transport is provided by the Kolkata Suburban Railway, the Kolkata Metro, trams, rickshaws, taxis and buses. The suburban rail network connects the city's distant suburbs.

d. Tirupati (Andhra Pradesh): Family Duty Station – Tirupati is a city in Chittoor district of the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh, located 415 km southwest of state's capital Amaravati. Tirupati is a municipal corporation and is the seventh most urban agglomerated city in the state. Tourism sector is of great importance to the city because of the presence of Tirumala Venkateswara Temple and a number of other temples in and around the city. Tirupati has a tropical wet and dry climate. It is in close proximity with the states of Karnataka and Tamil Nadu and is well connected to major cities through national and state highways.
