Background

A core focus of the UN Women Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific Women’s Economic Empowerment (WEE) unit is accelerating gender-inclusive business practice by mobilizing companies to commit to and implement the Women’s Empowerment Principles (WEPs). Launched in 2010 by UN Women and the UN Global Compact in 2010, the WEPs are a set of 7 principles that support companies to take a gender-sensitive approach throughout their value chain starting with corporate leadership and looking across the wider value chain from workplace, marketplace and community.

Aiming to showcase the best practices of these companies and mobilize further action, UN Women launched the first-ever Asia-Pacific WEPs Awards in 2020 under the WeEmpowerAsia porgramme. WeEmpowerAsia is a UN Women programmed funded by the EU aiming to increase the number of women who participate and lead in businesses in the Asia-Pacific. The programme works with companies in Asia and in the EU to translate these seven principles into concrete actions within the businesses, while encouraging them to work together and share their ‘WEPs journey’ across countries and regions. To date, nearly 6,500 companies have signed the WEPs globally, and in the Asia-Pacific over 1,700 have committed.

As the only regional awards initiative recognizing private sector action for gender equality aligned to the WEPs, the Awards offer a unique opportunity for organizations to showcase their work in a diverse range of areas relevant to women’s empowerment. The WEPs Awards is open to private sector organizations in any Asia-Pacific, with national processes and ceremonies taking place in the 7 WEA programme countries head of the culminating Regional Ceremony. Over the past two awards cycles, more than 1,000 applications have been received from 500+ corporates, SMEs, and entrepreneurs across 20 countries. With the successful partnership in 2021 with Investing in Women (IW), the 2022 Awards is co-organized with the continued support of the Australian Government (DFAT) as part of UN Women’s and DFATs broader strategic partnership in Asia-Pacific.

UN Women 2022 Asia-Pacific WEPs Awards Awardee Profiles

As a follow up to the Regional Ceremony, UN Women is seeking a consultant to produce (draft and design) seven Awardee profiles that showcase the top winning initiatives and provide insight as to how businesses across the region implement the WEPs to advance gender equality. See one of the 2021 Awardee profiles as reference here.
