UNICEF works in some of the world’s toughest places, to reach the world’s most disadvantaged children. To save their lives. To defend their rights. To help them fulfill their potential.

Across 190 countries and territories, we work for every child, everywhere, every day, to build a better world for everyone.

And we never give up.

Intern to coordinate youth led advocacy and action for climate change.

Background and purpose

Inspired by young people for making positive change, UNICEF’s Education and Adolescent Development and Participation (ADAP) team’s Youth-Led Action against Climate Change Programme aims to equip young people with improved knowledge, skills and capacities to successfully bring about positive change in their lives and in their communities.

Amplifying climate change advocacy is a key area of UNICEF in the new Country Program. The Youth-Led Advocacy Action against Climate Change Programme will help young people hold stakeholders accountable to their commitments taken at COP and in general to advocate for climate change policies.

The Programme will support young education advocates through a journey to influence national climate change related policies which consists of awareness and advocacy, policy negotiation and strengthening of youth led movement. UNICEF will do so by building the knowledge, skills, capacities and allyships necessary for young advocates to influence and succeed as changemakers against climate change.

Against this backdrop, UNICEF Maldives intends to recruit an intern possibly not older than 24 years, who will be responsible to coordinate the planning and the implementation of youth led activities around climate change.

Duty station: In Male’ Maldives. Generally, Office based but can be home based (when required).

Supervisor: Program specialist, Education and Skills Development.

Major tasks, and Deliverables:

Major tasks

Deliverables

  • Agree with UNICEF country office on expected results and define a work plan.

Short description: UNICEF CO has a vision for youth engagement in climate change. In occasion of one/two meetings, an appointed focal point at UNICEF CO will explain its vision and expectations from the internship as well as the support that UNICEF will provide to the intern.

For networking of young advocates, UNICEF will broker with key stakeholders for these policies. The Young coordinator/intern will also rely on his/her connections. Networking should start as soon as policy is identified and continue throughout the consultancy.

Work plan and deliverables agreed with UNICEF CO

  • Identify national processes for policies/strategy/plans on transforming education and network with stakeholders

Short description: Agree with UNICEF CO what policy/programme/strategy to target through advocacy.

These can be National Policies, Sector Plans, or local strategies on climate change (NDC, NAP, etc) but also other policies that will have an influence on climate change (e.g. industrial development, energy policy).

List of youth organizations and individuals to work together with available

  • Map youth organizations/key individuals active on transforming education advocacy.

Short description: Climate change individual advocates or organizations are probably already active in the country. It is very important that the work of this internship supports the work of already existing initiatives.

24 short video recordings on UPSHIFT content.

  • Establish a coordination team of youth organizations to conduct transforming policy advocacy.

Short description: Advocacy activities will have to be coordinated among the different youth organizations and individuals that agree to collaborate. The intern will establish a coordination team or, if a coordination mechanism already exists, the intern will join existing team and provide support as needed.

Membership of team available calendar of planned meetings available

Attend capacity building sessions organized by UNICEF HQ team.

  • Short description: 6 modules (about 3 hours each) will be provided by UNICEF HQ on theory and planning for Awareness raising and Advocacy, Policy Negotiation and Strengthening of a youth movement. This is when the focus moves from advocacy to policy work, i.e. giving input in the process. The modalities, the timing and who gets these sits will be agreed with the counterparts, it can be the consultant or other members of the coordination team. UNICEF will play the role of convener and remain vigilant that inputs of climate activists are taken into consideration.

Policy proposal available

  • Connect with colleagues in other countries.

Short description: this initiative will happen in a total of 7 countries. The coordinator/intern will attend coordination meetings and “cliniques” organized by UNICEF HQ and SDG4 Youth Network. The coordinator/ intern will also, on a need and spontaneous basis, be in touch with the other youth coordinators in other countries

Attendance to meetings (Zoom automatic reports)
