Duties and Responsibilities

The full-time internship position is located in the United Nations Information Centre (UNIC) Windhoek. UNIC Windhoek is one of the most well-known United Nations entities in Namibia, with a celebrated reputation of being reliable and responsible for UN advocacy, media engagements and educational outreach in the country. The incumbent is under the direct supervision of the Head of Office of UNIC Windhoek. The intern will support the team in the administration and with strategic communication priorities. Duties may include but are not limited to: - Assist in public information projects of UNIC, UN Communication Group and the UN Country Team. - Assist in producing social media plans and campaigns, as well as explore more potential online initiatives to raise visibility of UN works. - Assist UNIC in maintaining its social media channels. - Assist in the organization and execution of events to mark UN days observances, press conferences, media launches, campaigns, educational outreach, or exhibitions. - Help design various information materials, including publication covers, presentation templates, flyers, infographics, and social media visuals. - Help take photos of events, when required and provide assistance in managing the photo library. - Provide assistance in shooting and editing film videos, mix sound and slideshows, if required. - Edit and subtitle news videos for UN Namibia social media channels, using dedicated software (such as Adobe Premiere Pro or Canva); create visuals, quote cards and other materials as requested using online tools (such as Canva or Adobe Photoshop). - Provide general office support (e.g. processing correspondence, maintaining files, records, and/or contact directory/databases, organizing meetings, taking meeting minutes, etc.). - Collect and collate multimedia information from different departments and organizations. - Monitor various sources for new content and information about what is happening in and around the UN on a given week. - Attend press conferences, meetings, and events in Windhoek to gather quotes and take photos and videos which can be used in social media posts. - Draft posts for Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. - Research trends and posts from partners and suggest retweets/reposts; monitor the social media accounts for followers' comments and questions, and flag them to the team. - Take an active role in the live coverage of events taking place in Windhoek. - Undertake statistical reporting reflecting performance of the UNIC’s social media accounts. - Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications/special skills

Applicants must meet one of the following requirements: (a) Be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); OR (b) Be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor’s degree or equivalent). Applicants to the UN Internship Programme are not required to have professional work experience. However, a field of study that is closely related to the type of internship that you are applying for is required. Applicants must be a student in the final year of the first university degree (bachelor or equivalent), Master’s or Ph.D. Programme or equivalent, or have completed a Bachelor’s, Master’s or PH.D. Applicants must have good knowledge of standard software applications, especially MS Word, MS PowerPoint, and MS Teams. Ability to draft news articles and/or social media posts is desirable. Ability to design surveys and polls is desirable.

Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Fluency in spoken and written English is required for the internship. Knowledge of an additional official UN language is an advantage. Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish are the official languages of the United Nations Secretariat.

Costs and arrangements for travel, visas, accommodation and living expenses are the responsibility of interns or their sponsoring institutions. Interns who are not citizens or permanent residents of the country where the internship is undertaken, may be required to obtain the appropriate visa and work/employment authorization.
