Org. Setting and Reporting This internship is located with the Office of Information and Communications Technology (OICT), under the Operations Support Division. The internship is for three months with an opportunity for extension for an additional three months, depending on the needs of the Office. The internship is UNPAID and full-time. Interns work five days per week (35 hours) under the supervision of a staff member in the department or office to which they are assigned. Applicants may be requested to undertake the internship remotely in view of constraints regarding visa issuance, international travel and access to UN premises. Applicants must be willing and prepared to undertake the internship remotely for a part or the entirety of the internship.

Under the direct supervision of the Chief or his/her designated officer, the incumbent is responsible for the following duties in the Regional Service Management under Operations Support Division (OSD), Office of Information and Communications Technology (OICT).

Responsibilities Daily responsibilities will be determined by the intern's background, their designated office assignment, and the duration of the internship. The role focuses on supporting the ICT teams across a spectrum of IT endeavors, encompassing project assistance, data management, process enhancement, and documentation. Collaboration with a diverse range of stakeholders is essential, as is the active contribution to the various initiatives in OICT when directed. The intern will have a unique opportunity to acquire practical knowledge and understanding in the project and resources planning, as well as the complete lifecycle of implementation and operations within the United Nations global information technology.

  • Assist in various IT projects, services, and testing activities.
  • Support online collaboration tools and business process automation solutions related to OICT services.
  • Assist in the review of business and user needs and propose suitable solutions.
  • Assist in data management, including data capture, entry, and maintenance of information systems.
  • Support data collection, analysis, and visualization using tools like Excel, Power BI, and PowerPoint.
  • Review and document internal processes to assist in optimization.
  • Creatively support the development of new projects for innovative collaboration and business process automation.
  • Assist in creating documentation such as training materials, reports, manuals, and user specifications.
  • Coordinate with users, vendors, and teams within the UN system for IT services.
  • Assist in administrative and substantive support to meetings and conferences, including preparation of background documents and presentations, meeting minutes and logistics.
  • Assist with other IT-related tasks as needed.
  • Take on additional activities to ensure the success of the team.

Meets timeline for delivery of products or services to client.

Education To qualify for an internship with the United Nations Internship Programme, applicants must meet one of the following requirements: (a)Be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); or, (b)Be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor's level or equivalent). We are open to a broad range of educational backgrounds.

  • Demonstrated an intention to pursue further studies or a career in fields closely aligned with the responsibilities of Information and Communications Technology, Information Management, Project Management, Business Management, and Service Management.
  • Strong knowledge of Microsoft cloud technologies, including Office 365, SharePoint Online, and Azure is an advantage.
  • Knowledge of IT Service Management (ITIL Foundation) and Project Management (Prince 2) frameworks is an advantage.
  • Knowledge and proficiency in Office 365 tools or their equivalent consumer tools is an advantage.
  • Knowledge of utilizing business intelligence tools for data collection, consolidation, and analysis, including working with databases, Excel (Pivot Tables and queries), and Power BI, is an advantage.
  • Interest in developing sustainable ICT solutions with a focus on modern technologies is an advantage.
  • Ability to translate business requirements into effective IT solutions is an advantage.
  • Keen interest and understanding of customer-centric service delivery, emphasizing innovative enterprise ICT solutions, collaboration, and enhancing customer experiences, is an advantage.
  • Understanding of data management principles, encompassing real-time/streaming data, data warehousing, and data cleansing, is an advantage.

    Languages English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this position advertised, fluency in English is required. Knowledge of another official UN language is desirable.
