Duties and Responsibilities

Org. Setting and Reporting

This internship is in the Office for Disarmament Affairs (ODA), Geneva Branch. ODA provides substantive and organizational support to various United Nations bodies in the area of disarmament. The Office is mandated to provide objective, impartial and up-to-date information on disarmament issues and activities to Member States, States parties to multilateral agreements, intergovernmental organizations and institutions, departments and agencies of the United Nations system, research and educational institutions, civil society, especially non-governmental organizations, the media and the general public. Responsibilities

Daily responsibilities will depend on the individual’s background, the intern’s assigned tasks, and the internship period. The Intern will support the development and implementation of ODA's Information Technology (IT) services and systems. The intern shall undertake the following duties which may include, but are not limited to:  Work together with the ODA IT Team to build content-driven websites and contribute to the maintenance and update of the ODA website;  Contribute to the maintenance of ODA’s cloud computing environment;  Support the development of new portals and related data migration work within the Branch;  Prepare and incorporate graphics and multimedia content using open-source graphic/video editing tools;  Assist in performing front-end graphical design and video editing;  Assist in performing outreach using mainstream social networking and collaboration platforms;  Assist in other IT functions as necessary; and  Perform other duties, as requested.

Qualifications/special skills

Applicants must meet one of the following conditions:  Be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); or,  Be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor’s level or equivalent).  Main field of studies: information systems, communication technology or a related field; interest in distributed systems would be beneficial.  Have knowledge in Web Development using Javascript, HTML5 and CSS, and some experience with web development frameworks, preferably Angular or ReactJS/VueJS;  Be familiar with relational and no-relational databases such as PostgreSQL, Mysql and Mongo DB;  Be familiar with Content Management Systems in either PHP (Drupal or WordPress) or Python (Django or Flask);  Familiarity with cloud application management;  Have interest in web data scraping and building automation and text-based documents processing and asset;  Have a demonstrated interest in the work of the United Nations and a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter; and  Have a demonstrated ability to interact successfully with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which includes a willingness to be tolerant of differing opinions and views. However, a field of study that is closely related to the type of internship that you are applying for is required. Applicants must be a student in the final year of the first university degree (bachelor or equivalent), Master's or Ph.D. Programme or equivalent, or have completed a Bachelor's, Master's or Ph.D. Programme. Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Fluency in spoken and written English is required for the internship. Knowledge of an additional official UN language is an advantage. Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish are the official languages of the United Nations Secretariat.
