Duties and Responsibilities

This internship is located within the Space Applications Section (SAS) of the Information and Communications Technology and Disaster Risk Reduction Division of ESCAP. The internship is UNPAID and full-time for a period of two to six months, depending on the needs of the division or office. Qualified applicants who can commit to a longer internship duration will be preferred. Interns work five days per week (35 hours) in-person under the supervision of the Chief, Space Applications Section and the relevant officer/s within SAS who are leading task teams and projects. Applicants who wish to do their internship remotely will be considered on a case- by-case basis. The responsibilities of the interns range from providing research support, assisting in project implementation and development of digital platforms and multi-media content. Each intern will have a work plan which will be developed with the supervisor based on the intern's skills and interests, educational background, and future academic/career plans. The intern will be working with a dynamic team. Duties may include, but are not limited to the following: i) Conduct research on space applications for sustainable development related to the six thematic areas covered by the Asia-Pacific Plan of Action on Space Applications for Sustainable Development, namely: (a) disaster risk management; (b) natural resource management; (c) connectivity; (d) social development; (e) energy; and (f) climate change. Research inputs will be used to develop various knowledge products, including UN publications, working and technical papers and the contributions of the interns will be duly acknowledged; ii) Assist in developing and/or updating digital platforms and multi-media content; iii) Provide support in the implementation of capacity development projects; and iv) Support the team in their day-to-day activities and tasks.

Qualifications/special skills

To qualify for an internship with the United Nations Internship Programme, applicants to the programme must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements: a) be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); or b) be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor's level or equivalent). No working experience is required to apply for the United Nations Internship Programme. Your training, education, advance course work or skills should benefit the United Nations during your internship.

Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Fluency in spoken and written English is required for the internship. Knowledge of another official UN language is an advantage. Candidates who are fluent in Korean, Japanese and Russian are strongly encouraged to apply for this position.
