Org. Setting and Reporting UNODC Regional Office for West and Central Africa is offering an Internship under the Sahel Programme the internship is for three months with an opportunity for extension, subject to the needs of the project and the availability of the intern.

The internship is UNPAID and full-time.

Interns work five days per week (35.5 hours) under the overall supervision of the Chief of UNODC Office in Nouakchott.

In the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, applicants may be requested to undertake the internship remotely in view of constraints regarding visa issuance, international travel and access to UN premises. Applicants must be willing and prepared to undertake the internship remotely for a part or the entirety of the internship.

Responsibilities UNODC Office in Nouakchott works in support to the G5 Sahel, including the PCMS, the Police Component and the Regional Police Academy, and the Government of Mauritania. The following projects are being implemented by UNODC Office : (i) project with ILO to support children in conflict with the Law ; (ii) project with UNESCO to reinforce women leadership in the prevention of violent extremism; (iii) projects of National Volunteer in support to prisons institutions ; (iv) project on the prevention of violent extremism and the fight against transnational organised crimes among communities.

The internship candidate will be required to perform the following duties: - Conduct basic open-source research on criminalities across the sahel region including terrorism, illicit trafficking and other forms of organized crime; - Contribute to the implementation of the projects conducted by UNODC Office in Nouakchott; - Contribute to the elaboration of background documents, presentations, briefing notes, summaries, talking points and speeches; - Support UNODC Office in Mauritania with the communication and visibility through drafting, editing and designing of publications such as newsletters, leaflets and brochures; - Support UNODC Office in Mauritania with the development of projects; - Assist in the administrative preparation of national and regional technical assistance workshops, meetings, high-level events and conferences; - Assist in the preparation of meeting minutes and other internal documents; - Translate documents from Arabic to French and French to Arabic; - Perform other tasks, as necessary.

Competencies - Planning and Organizing: Ability to establish priorities and to plan, coordinate and monitor work plans, prioritize competing demands and work to tight deadlines. - Communication: Ability to draft clearly and concisely, to communicate effectively, including ability to prepare reports and conduct presentations by clearly formulating positions on issues, articulating options concisely, and making and defending recommendations. - Teamwork: Good interpersonal skills, ability to work collaboratively with colleagues from different national and cultural backgrounds to achieve organizational goals

Education To qualify for an internship with the United Nations Internship Programme, the following conditions must be met: - Applicants must meet one of the following requirements: (a) be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); (b) be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent); or (c) have graduated with a university degree (as defined above) and, if selected, must commence the internship within a one year period of graduation (OFFICIAL PROOF FROM THE UNIVERSITY IN SUPPORT OF ONE OF THE ABOVE OPTIONS HAS TO BE ATTACHED TO THE INSPIRA APPLICATION); - Be computer literate in standard software applications; - Have a demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter; and - Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.

Work Experience No working experience is required to apply for the United Nations Internship Programme. Your training, education, advance course work or skills should benefit the United Nations during your internship.

Languages English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Fluency in spoken and written French and Arabic is required for the internship. Knowledge of French is desirable.
