Duties and Responsibilities

Org. Setting and Reporting This position is located in United Nations Platform for Space-based Information for Disaster Management and Emergency Response (UN-SPIDER) , United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs (UNOOSA), in Bonn, Germany. The incumbent will work under the direct supervision of the Head of the Bonn Office, UN-SPIDER In its resolution 61/110 of 14 December 2006 the United Nations General Assembly agreed to establish the "United Nations Platform for Space-based Information for Disaster Management and Emergency Response - UN-SPIDER" as a new United Nations programme, with the following mission statement: "Ensure that all countries and international and regional organizations have access to and develop the capacity to use all types of space-based information to support the full disaster management cycle".A number of initiatives in recent years have contributed in making space technologies available for humanitarian aid and emergency response. Yet, UN-SPIDER is the first to focus on the need to ensure access to and use of such technologies during all phases of the disaster management cycle, including the risk reduction phase which is crucial for reducing the losses of lives and property. The internship is UNPAID and interns work five days per week (full time - 40 hours). Support the Bonn Office in the incorporation of content from the publication on Space Technologies for Early Warning Systems in the UN-SPIDER Knowledge Portal. 2. Support the UN-SPIDER Bonn office with drafting and publishing additional content in the UN-SPIDER Knowledge Portal related to disaster risk reduction and early warning systems. 3. Support the UN-SPIDER Bonn Office and UNOOSA in the organization of the World Space Forum from 3 to 6 Dec. 2024. 4. Perform other tasks, as necessary 5. Give a presentation on his/her internship and write an internship report

Qualifications/special skills

The basic education required is HS Diploma. Applicants must meet one of the following requirements: (a) be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); (b) be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor’s degree or equivalent). However, a field of study that is closely related to the type of internship that you are applying for is required. Applicants must be a student in the final year of the first university degree (bachelor or equivalent), Master’s or Ph.D. Programme or equivalent, or have completed a Bachelor’s, Master’s or PH.D. Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Fluency in spoken and written English is required for the internship. Knowledge of an additional official UN language is an advantage. Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish are the official languages of the United Nations Secretariat.
